What do people want from music videos

Question 1
What is your gender?
The reason for asking this question was so I could
get a sense of how many people were answering
my questionnaire. It also displays any differences
between either males or females of what that
gender want from a specific music videos.

The question may also constructs corresponding

links and might reveal common patterns
happening in both genders. An example could
be that men are more likely to have an interest in
rock music compared to women.

Overall, we have 42.31% of the results coming from women and 57.69% from men. This could have been
caused from me sharing this questionnaire through Facebook where I have more male friends compared
to women.
Question 2
How old are you?
This question allows me to see what ages groups music videos appealing too. Once again, it may
presents common patterns that help me link together my results.

The results from this question highlighted that the age group is between 15 to 62
Question 3
What genres would you normally listen to?
By getting people to pick want genre they prefer from a
list allows me to see what genre is most popular or has
an interest. I can also make links between specific ages
or gender to see if there are any patterns that develop.

Clearly the most listened to genre was pop music which

was answer by the ages of 17-62 both men and women.
This demonstrates that pop music has a wide audience
that it appeals to.

But what was interesting was that mostly people aged 17

picked pop music. But people above the age 17 would
pick other options.
Question 4
Is there a video you could specify from one of these genres?
Here I am getting people to specify what artist they link with there chosen genre. This helps in terms of
seeing what artists are typically indentited within that genre.

I got a bunch of different responses as well as some people commented that they couldnt think of any
examples. But one video that popped up more than once was Peter Gabriel with Sledgehammer which
is in the rock genre.

People who picked pop as there genre answered the question with artists such as Jessie J, Abba and
Ariana Grande. People who chose Rock music answered with bands like The Foo Fighters and ACDC.
One thing that was clear was people were answering the question with popular and well know artists. All
the artists mentioned also had a clear brand identify that was unique to them and the audience easily
related to.

Question 5
Why do you watch music videos?
This question came from Bulmer and Katz theory of the Uses and gratification. It shows what audiences
do with the media they consume. I asked it so I could see what music video do for an audience.

The final result was not surprising as 65% of people

use music video as a form of entertainment. This
tells me that my video will need to be entertaining
in order reach the gratification.

15.38% was shared between audiences using music

videos as form of escapism or a way of finding self
identity.

Also surprisingly, we have 19.23% of people taking

this questionnaire who dont seem to watch music
videos at all.
Question 6
Which video do you prefer out of the three below?
Here I gave people the choice out of three videos. This was to see what type of music video creates more
interest and is most popular. Video 1 was a narrative music video, 2 was concept and 3 performance.

The most popular style was narrative

with 64% followed by concept with 24%.
Then with 12% for performance.

This tells me that my music video will have

be narrative or concept or even both if I
want to create a bigger audience.
Question 7
Do you watch music videos on TV (MTV, 4Music) or listen to BBC Radio 1 regularly?
This question is all about me seeing how many people listen or have an interest in mainstream music. This is
defined as songs commonly featured on TV, Radio and the top 40. When developing the question I tried
different ways of phrasing it like Do you listen to songs commonly played on tv or radio? or Do you like
mainstream music?. But I needed to phrase it in a way that people could understand as well as answer
easily. I ended up using 4music, MTV and BBC Radio 1 as examples. Because they are media platforms
that are well know to play this type of music.
Im surprised by the result. However I now feel Ive
asked the wrong question because of me limiting the
options and not seeing the wider perspective this
question can be interpreted. For example MTV and
BBC Radio 1 is normally typically seen as platforms for
the youth. This instantly means that anyone older than
say 21 is unable to answer to the question leading them
to the I dont do either option. Which I feel has
happened and why its come out on top with 17 out of
26 selecting it. If I was to do this question again I would
of phrased as Do you listen to chart music?
Question 8
Are music video's an important aspect when promoting a song?
I wanted see if people thought music videos were important. And if its a good way of promoting a song to
them as an individual.
61% of people said that is was a good
way of promoting a song.

And 23% didnt know.

And 15% Said it wasnt.

Question 9
What do you not like about music videos?
There are many aspect of music I hate and I wanted to see if that was the case for others.

A clear relationship between the video and

lyrics is something I defiantly need to include as
50% of the people dislike a video that doesnt
link. There also needs to be aspects within my
video where the audience can relate too.
Length wise, my video needs to be 3 minutes
and half long roughly as lengthy music video
are not liked either.

42% of people also dont like when women

characters are represented in a sexual way.
This is a convention that is normally used in
music video in order to attract a male
audience. If I want more of a female
audience then I will need to present women in
a more in a less sexual way.
Question 10
If you selected other (could you please specify)?
I only included aspects of music videos I dont like myself within question 9. Asking this question, allows me
to see what other people dont like about music videos.

Overall I am disappointed with theses results as I only got 6 responses. 3 of those People answered with I
dont know.

However, I did get two responses that talked about making the video exciting and fun to watch otherwise
its classed as being boring. One person even said about not repeating elements within the video.
