A. Meaning & Types of Banks

• Banking may be defined as an activity by


an organisation which trade in money, as
well money is deposited and distributed for
interest earning and interest expense and
for remittances of fund.
• Banks may be classifies into many types
on various basis as follows :

B. Functions and Roles of Different
Types of banks
• CENTRAL BANK : It is the apex body of banking
System in a country .In India RBI is the central
Bank
• Functions of RBI :
• 1.bankers to all banks
• 2.Printing Controlling ,and circulation of money
• 3.Regulating Current Reverve Ratio( CRR)and
Statutory Liquidity Ratio( SLR),Margin Money
etc.
• 4.Custodian of foreign Exchange reserve of the country
• 5.Controlling Finance function of the country
• COMMERCIAL BANK :Bank which receives deposit from
public and invest in Short term and long term project to
return the money to the depositors and earn interest by
lending .Eg.SBI , UBI, etc.
• Functions :
• 1.Collection of Deposit
• 2.Granting Loans and Advances
• 3.Credit Creation by commercial bank .
• 4.Providing services like Trusteeship,
Consultants ,Custodian service ,etc.
• 5.Remittance of Funds
• 6.Modern banking Services like Debut

• POSTAL BANK :It is a bank run by the
post office to provide banking facilities to
the masses .
• Functions :
• 1.Mainly accepting deposit
• 2.Providing monthly income
• 3.Microbanking in rural area.
• CO OPERATIVE BANK: It is the bank of the
farmers to provide loan for agriculture and allied
activities , Liluah Co Operative bank , etc.
• DEVELOPMENT BANKING : Bank to invest in
infrastructure , and long term project .Eg. IDBI ,
NABARD etc.
• SCHEDULED BANK : It is a bank that is
included in the second schedule of the RBI ACT
134 which is a commercial bank, paid up capital
more than 5 Lakhs ,maintain SLR and CRR as
per RBI ,etc.Eg. SBI , HDFC bank, HSBC
