What is Nanotechnology?
History
The earliest systematic discussion of
nanotechnology is considered to be a
speech given by Richard Feynman in 1959.
The American engineer K. Eric Drexler is
credited with the development of
molecular nanotechnology, leading to
Nano systems machinery manufacturing.

Characterization
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)
Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM)
Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy (UVS)
X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS)
Scanning Electron Microscopy
The Scanning Electron Microscope
is an microscope that images the
sample surface by scanning it with a
high energy beam of electrons.
The SEM shows very detailed three
dimensional images at much high
magnifications as compared to light
microscope. But as the images are
created without light waves, they
are black and white.
Atomic Force Microscopy
The Atomic Force Microscope is ideal
for quantitatively measuring the
nanometre scale surface roughness
and for visualizing the surface Nano-
texture.
The information is gathered by
"feeling" or "touching" the surface
with a mechanical
probe. piezoelectric elements that
facilitate tiny but accurate and
precise movements on (electronic)
command enable very precise
scanning.
Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy
A Scanning Tunnelling Microscope is an
instrument for imaging surfaces at the
atomic level.
It was the first instrument to generate
real images of the surfaces with atomic
resolution.
STM is a non-optical microscope which
employs principles o quantum
mechanics.
Ultraviolet-visible Spectroscopy
Ultraviolet spectrophotometers
consist of a light source, reference
and sample beams, a
monochromator and a detector.
UV-Visible spectroscopy is a
technique used to quantify the
light that is absorbed and
scattered by a sample
X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS)
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is
a quantitative spectroscopic surface
chemical analysis technique used to
estimate chemical state and
electronic state of the elements on
the surface of a material.
X-ray irradiation of a material under
ultra-high vacuum (UHV) leads to
the emission of electrons from the
core orbitals of the top 10 nm of the
surface elements of the material
being analyzed.
Advantages
Nanotechnology can actually revolutionize a lot of
electronic products, procedures, and applications.
The development of more effective energy-producing,
energy-absorbing, and energy storage products in smaller
and more efficient devices is possible with this technology.
The materials produced by using Nanotechnology are often
stronger, more durable, and lighter than others.
In the medical world, nanotechnology is also seen as a
boon since these can help with creating what is
called smart drugs.
Disadvantages
It is the possible loss of jobs in the traditional farming and
manufacturing industry.
The development of nanotechnology can also bring about
the crash of certain markets.
Atomic weapons can now be more accessible and made to
be more powerful and more destructive.
Presently, nanotechnology is very expensive and
developing it can cost you a lot of money. It is also pretty
difficult to manufacture, which is probably why products
made with nanotechnology are more expensive.
