Piping Specifications & Flow Diagrams
What is a pipe?

A pipe is a tube used to convey water, gas, oil, or

other fluid substances.
Tubes are different from pipes as they are
designated by their BWG No. (Birmingham Wire
Gauge)
A pipe is designated by its NPS (Nominal Pipe Size)
and Schedule
They usually come in single random (12.5) or
double random lengths (25)

PFD and P&ID

In the previous slides, a whole piping system has

been designed.
We represent the whole thing in a drawing which
is called Piping and Instrumentation Drawing, in
short P&ID.
A more simplified form of P&ID is known as a PFD
which is commonly used to indicate the
general flow of plant processes and equipment.
The PFD displays the relationship between major
equipment of a plant facility and does not show
minor details such as piping details and
designations.

Piping Specifications

The Piping Specification (abbreviated: PIPE SPEC) is a

document prepared during the design phase of any
project. It provides the appropriate selection,
specification and material grade of pipe and piping
components for a given service.
A piping specification only applies to the defined plant,
site or installation. Other sites or plants for example can
have their own piping specifications and they are NOT
interchangeable.

BF-1028-3 (1S1) is a line no. taken from the sample P&ID

BF Designates the Services, which In this case is

Boiler Feed Water
Designates the pipeline number which is a
1028 unique number allocated to a specific section or
run of pipe during the design stages.
3 Designates the nominal pipe size of the line.
This is a short-hand reference into the piping
1S1 specification document, and is also unique to that
document. The first number normally refers to the
pressure rating of the system.
