DEFINITION

Interlingual errors are those that result from language

transfer and are caused by the learner’s native language, say
LI whereas the Intralingual errors are those which result
from faulty or partial learning of L2, rather than from
language transfer.
Some Opinions of
Interlingual Sources

Corder (1981) states that Lado (1964) says Interference

these kinds of errors occur (negative transfer) is negative
when the learner's habits influence of the mother tongue
(patterns, systems, or rules) (L1) on the performance of the
interfere or prevent him or target language (L2
her, to some extent, from
acquiring the patterns and
rules of the second language

Richard (1974: 173) states if the

Chelli (2013) defines that learners of a foreign language
interlingual errors as being the make mistake in the target
result of language transfer, language by effect of his mother
which is caused by learner's tongue that is called as
first language interlingual
SOME SOURCES OF ERROR
(INTERLINGUAL)

The native language

of lerners plays a
significant role in
learning a second
language. Errors due
to the influence of
the native language
are called interlingual
errors.
TYPES OF ERRORS
Among the most frequent
sources of errors Brown
counts:

Interlingual Intralingual
transfer transfer

Context of learning
INTERLINGUAL TRANSFER

Mother-tongue influence, causes interlingual

errors. They are very frequent at the initial
stages of L2 Learning since the L1 is the only
language system the learner knows and can
draw and an therefore negative transfer
takes place.Brown also argues that when
one is learning L3,L4 etc., transfer takes
place from all the previously learnt languages
but the degree of transfer is variable
TWO TYPE OF ERRORS MAY ALSO
BE CLASSIFIED
THREE TYPE OF GLOBAL ERRORS

GLOBAL LEXICAL GLOBAL MORPHOLOGICAL GLOBAL SYNTACTIC

ERRORS ERRORS ERRORS
e.g. We will arrive back to e.g: There are three clever student in e.g. I am lack of
Jakarta after 5 o’clock our class knowledge instead I
instead watch. lack knowledge
THREE TYPE OF LOCAL ERRORS

LOCAL LEXICAL ERRORS LOCAL LOCAL SYNTACTIC

e.g. Before he slept he MORPHOLOGICAL ERRORS
turned-off the curtains ERRORS e.g. They enjoyed highly her
instead “closed” e.g. He look at his sister cooking instead they highly
instead of “looks” enjoyed her cooking
ERRORS MADE BY THE LEARNERS OF TL MAY BE
CLASSIFIED IN DIFFERENT WAYS. FROM POINT OF
VIEW APPROPRIATNESS WE FIND:

Referential errors: errors to

refer something someone Register Errors: Errors in
e.g. A priest as a minister using the correct “Register”
A scottish kilt: a skirt etc, e.g. Saying boat instead ship

Social Errors: errors commited due to Textual Errors: error

the wrong choice of terms in committed because of the
connection with the social relation wrong structure used.
between the spekers and hearer. e.g. When a hearer replies to
e.g. Hello, cute girl. Hello, old man the question: who is he
talking to? With: Rudi is”
