GLOBAL CRISIS

Global Crisis
• In the prime of globalization, we are
experiencing an accumulation of four
interrelated crises, mutually feeding on each
other:
– Climate change crisis
– oil and energy (price) crisis
– Food (and hunger) crisis
– Financial and economic crisis
Types of Global Crisis
• Food
• Water
• Fuel
• Economic
• Energy
• Environmental
Economic Crisis
• It contributed to the failure of key businesses,
declines in consumer wealth estimated in the
trillions of U.S. dollars, substantial financial
commitments incurred by governments, and a
significant decline in economic activity.
The Risk of Global Recession
• The current global financial crisis is among the
greatest challenges to the world economy since
the end of World War II. Unlike past financial
crises, which were confined to particular regions,
the current financial contagion is quickly
spreading across continents. Unless action is
taken in the next few months to shore up
faltering countries and restore confidence in the
global economy, the world will face a deep and
prolonged recession.
Water Crisis

• While the world's population

tripled in the 20th century, the
use of renewable water
resources has grown six-fold.
Within the next fifty years, the
world population will increase
by another 40 to 50 %. This
population growth - coupled
with industrialization and
urbanization - will result in an
increasing demand for water
and will have serious
consequences on the
environment.
The concept of Water Stress

Water stress results from an

imbalance between water use
and water resources. The
water stress indicator in this
map measures the proportion
of water withdrawal with
respect to total renewable
resources.
Food Crisis
• The sugar coated bullets of the "free
market" are killing our children. The act to
kill is unpremeditated. It is instrumented
in a detached fashion through computer
program trading on the New York and
Chicago mercantile exchanges, where the
global prices of rice, wheat and corn are
decided upon.
Poverty is not solely the result of policy
failures at a national level. People in
different countries are being impoverished
simultaneously as a result of a global
market mechanism. A small number of
financial institutions and global
corporations have the ability to determine,
through market manipulation, the
standard of living of millions of people
around the World.

Oil crisis
The movement in global prices on the New York and The price of crude oil
Chicago mercantile exchanges bears no relationship to the
costs of producing oil. The spiraling price of crude oil is not is currently in excess of $120 a
the result of a shortage of oil. It is estimated that the cost
of a barrel of oil in the Middle East does not exceed 15 barrel. This market price is
dollars. The costs of a barrel of oil extracted from the tar
sands of Alberta, Canada, is of the order of $30 (Antoine largely the result of the
Ayoub, Radio Canada, May 2008)
speculative onslaught.
Energy Crisis
Our present technologies are not sustainable. We are living on capital. Given
that one hour of sunlight could provide our annual needs for one year, the
future must be with solar energy. Geothermal energy sources, using the
normal thermal gradient of Earth, are also impressive. There is no sign that
Homo sapiens has the wisdom to use fission energy given the potential abuses
of this technology. One thing is certain, if we continue to burn fossil carbon to
supply the world's increasing energy demands, the consequences will be
devastating for all life.
• Carbon emissions have greatly
ENVIRONMENTAL increased over the past 200
CRISIS years, as humanity discovered
coal and factories and motor
vehicles. Human population has
also increased from one billion
to almost six billion, and all
these people want to live with
refrigerators, televisions and
motor vehicles with air
conditioning. This puts
tremendous pressure on
governments all over the world
to provide more and more
electricity. Most electricity is
produced by burning coal and
other fossil fuels.
