Materials & Assembly Method
Two pieces of tissue paper were glued together by the edges to get one long piece of
tissue paper (we repeated this 6 times). Then, a template for the balloon was
created, which was in the shape of a short broadsword with a very thick handle. The
template was used to cut the 6 pieces of tissue paper into the same shape. Next,
each piece was glued together by the edges, and a circle was glued to the top to
prevent any leakage of air from the balloon. Finally, a base was created out of a soda
can and some wire (can be seen on the diagram), and put together with the balloon.
Calculation: Molar Mass of Air
Element/ Molecule Molar Mass Percent in air

Nitrogen (N2) 28 g/mol 78.08 %

Oxygen (O2) 32 g/mol 20.95 %

Carbon Dioxide (CO2 ) 44 g/mol 0.04 %

Argon (Ar) + Other 40 g/mol 0.93 %

Mass of air in balloon in grams:

0.7516 mol [ 28.956 g Air / 1 mol] = 21.7633 g Air

Theory: Why a Hot Air Balloon Rises
As the air inside the balloon begins to heat up, its density decreases to the point
where it is lower than that of the surrounding air. Since the balloon’s density is
lower, it will begin to rise and float in the air.
