Philippine Tectonic Plates

Origin
• Crust of the Philippine Sea Plate origin has a basement of ophiolitic
and/or arc origin.
Ophiolites are remnants of an early Mesozoic intro-oceanic arc rather than
Pacific ocean floor. They are overlain by and imbricated with arc volcanic and
sedimentary rocks of Late Cretaceous-Eocene age;arc plutonic rocks intrude the
ophiolites.
In short: Ophiolite is a section of the Earth's oceanic crust and the underlying
upper mantle that has been uplifted and exposed above sea level.
A continental arc is a type of volcanic arc occurring as an "arc-shape"
topographic high region along a continental margin.
Origin

•The plutonic rocks that intrude the ophiolites are parts of the eastern
Philippines and the ridges of the north Philippine Sea.

•45 Ma—Change in Pacific Plate motion and plate reorganization.

•Products of volcanic arc at the edge of the Philippine Sea Plate:

limestones, basaltic pillow lavas, and turbites.
The volcanoes of the Philippines are the most deadly and costly
in the world. Fatalities have been caused by 13% of the historic
eruptions, most notably at Taal and Mayon, and 22% of the eruptions
caused damage. Tsunami are more commonly associated with eruptions
at the Philippines than in any other volcanic region. Violent volcanic
eruptions represent impulsive disturbances, which can displace a great
volume of water and generate extremely destructive tsunami waves in
the immediate source area.
