Target Audience

What genre does your chosen song fall into?
‡ Our chosen song is µAlarms¶ by Pilots; an unsigned indie band. The song falls into the genre of indie. ‡ Originally the indie music genre was defined by the fact that indie bands belonged to an Independent record label, and not to the big mainstream record labels. However, now many indie bands belong to big record labels and not Independent ones, so this is no longer true. ‡ Wikipedia states: ³independent music, often shortened to indie music or "indie", is a term used to describe independence from major commercial record labels and an autonomous, Do-It-Yourself approach to recording and publishing ‡ Our chosen band do not yet belong to any record label

Who typically buys this genre? How do you know?
The typical audience to buy the indie genre of music are young people between around the ages of 13 and 25. This is partly because Indie bands have a strong sense of image which appeals to young people. For example, the images show the well recognisable image that indie bands have, the band members are usually young, like their audience, and so the audience can relate to the band¶s sense of style and image, and often imitate it.

It is shown on that indie music videos, such as µAway From Here¶ by The Enemy are most popular with teenage girls between the ages of 13-17, and males ages 18-24.

These statistics are supported again by the views on the indie music video µTalk About It¶ by The Metros, where the video is most popular with females between the ages of 13-17 and 18-24, and males between the ages of 18-24. From these statistics we can see that indie music videos are most popular to watch with teenagers and young men and women; therefore this audience is also most likely to buy music of the indie genre, and so should be the target audience we have in mind when making our music video.

What are the likes/dislikes of your target audience? How are these reflected in other music videos from your chosen genre?
An indie audience likes the image of the band, and so this is an important aspect of the music video; the audience must be able to establish the band¶s image. Also, indie bands usually contain between 3 and 5 band members, playing different instruments and singing, and so some performance in the video is something indie music fans like to see in their music videos, however narrative or concept is also popular in the indie genre music videos, and so a mixture of a narrative or concept with performance based music video is something that would appeal to indie music audiences. For example, this is shown in the video µWe¶ll live and die in these towns¶ by The Enemy, in which there is concept and also features the lead singer singing the words during the video.
