country’s public-service broadcasting.

The two other public channels (Ned 2 and Ned 3) each have a daily share of about 7%, while the figure for the four private channels is between 3 and 5%. There were 4.9 million digital homes, up 182,900; the total number of TV homes was slightly up – 0.4% –by over 8 million. The number of digital TV homes now is 4.71 million, or 59.2% of the market. There are 4.5 million digital households, or 64% of the market. Of the 4.71 million digital homes, cable is the main digital infrastructure with a 53.9% share. Satellite DTH is the runner-up with 20.9%, followed by digital terrestrial (Digitenne) with 18.8%. IPTV now accounts for a 6.4% market share of the total digital TV market. Public service broadcasting is being overshadowed by the entry of private channels. Efforts are being made to strengthen the public sector by the introduction of new bodies like BNN (Bart’s New Network). This resulted in a slight increase in the market share of public broadcasters to 38%. At present three large parties dominate the television market. The public broadcasting system, HMG and SBS all have three nationwide channels at their disposal. Private television in The Netherlands is completely in the hands of foreign companies.
