 NPO is the name used in the Netherlands to refer to the

country’s public-service broadcasting.


 PSB in Netherlands is provided jointly by a number of
broadcasting organizations under the tutelage of NPO
 1951 saw the entry of television and Netherlands
Television Foundation was formed.
 The Media act required to satisfy the Programme quotas:
◦ 25% News and Information programmes
◦ 25% Entertainment and general programming
◦ 20% Cultural
◦ 5% Educational
 The 3 National Television channels are:
◦ Nederland 1
◦ Nederland 2
◦ Nederland 3
 In 2008 Nederland 1 was the most viewed channel reaching a
market share of 22.5%.
 The public channel only had an audience share of 11.9%
in 2005 but had increased it to 21.1% three years later.
 Its main private competitors, RTL 4 and SBS 6, are a
long way behind with 12.7% and 10.9% respectively.
 The two other public channels (Ned 2 and Ned 3) each
have a daily share of about 7%, while the figure for the
four private channels is between 3 and 5%.
 Six other channels have a daily audience of between 1
and 2%.

• 80% of homes subscribe to a cable television service,
making the Netherlands the second biggest cable
television European market after Germany.
• Dutch cable operators have seen their market share of
the digital TV market increased by 0.6% to a total of
54.4% during Q1 2010.
• A total of 61.3% of Dutch homes are now digital.
• Digitenne had a market share of 18.0% of the Dutch
digital TV market, down 0.7%.
• Canal Digitaal was the third largest digital TV provider
with a share of 16.9%, down 0.9%.
• IPTV had market share of 7.6% (up 0.9%), with two active
providers, KPN Interactieve TV and Tele 2.
 There were 4.9 million digital homes, up 182,900; the
total number of TV homes was slightly up – 0.4% –by
over 8 million.
  The number of digital TV homes now is 4.71 million, or
59.2% of the market.
 There are 4.5 million digital households, or 64% of the
market.
  Of the 4.71 million digital homes, cable is the main
digital infrastructure with a 53.9% share.
 Satellite DTH is the runner-up with 20.9%, followed by
digital terrestrial (Digitenne) with 18.8%.
 IPTV now accounts for a 6.4% market share of the total
digital TV market.
 Public service broadcasting is being overshadowed by the
entry of private channels.
 Efforts are being made to strengthen the public sector by
the introduction of new bodies like BNN (Bart’s New
Network).
 This resulted in a slight increase in the market share of
public broadcasters to 38%.
 At present three large parties dominate the television
market.
 The public broadcasting system, HMG and SBS all have
three nationwide channels at their disposal.
 Private television in The Netherlands is completely in the
hands of foreign companies.
