ELECTROCUTION

DEFINITION •Electrocution is death caused by passage of electricity .

or alternatively the earth .INJURIES DUE TO ELECTRICITY • For an electric shock to occur there must be contact by the body with both a positive and negative pole.

TYPES OF ELECTRIC BURNS •JOULE BURN •FLASH OR SPARK BURNS •ELECTRIC BURNS OR SPLITS .

JOULE BURN • Specific and diagnostic of contact with electricity and is found at the point of entry of current like palmar aspects of hand • It is endogenous thermal burn due to the heat generated in the body from electricity .

SKIN BECOMES BROWN WITH PROLONG CONTACT CHARRING DUE TO FURTHER CONTACT .

FLASH BURNS • They are due to contact with voltage in excess of thousand volts. . • When bone is involved. periosteum may be destroyed or fracture may occur.

.

. hard. • Occasionally localised oedema of a limb may occur followed by aseptic necrosis leading to sloughing. firm. charred.ELECTRIC BURNS • These are linear burns produced if the electrical conductor is a wire • Splits are dry. insensitive with ragged edges.

.

MECHANISM OF ELECTROCUTION .

due to inhibition of VMC • Cerebral anoxia due to ventricular fibrillation • Paralysis of respiratory muscles • Or due to mechanical injuries due to fall .CAUSE OF DEATH • Sudden death from shock • Ventricular fibrillation • Sudden cardio-respiratory arrest.
