• There’s an old saying: “clothes
don’t make the man”. I couldn’t
agree more with this as we can’t
hide ourselves behind shallow
shells like these.
• On the other hand, clothes may
reflect our personality in the best
way and not only our personality.
They can reveal very interesting
aspects of us such as our roots and
origins or, why not, our hopes and
dreams.
• When you become able to mix
several aspects when you choose
your clothes, that can tell about
your tastes and your culture and
knowledge. It is important not to
copy everything that comes on the
market, but to find your own way,
your own style.
• What is a defined style?
• It is a perfect combination of personality,
information, environment and last but not least,
history and tradition.
There were so many
times when we discover
ourselves searching our
parents’ and grandparents’
wardrobe, finding old but
amazing pieces of clothes
and trying them on.
What I find more
amazing is that the more I
use traditional clothes that I
always find in my
grandmother’s room, the
more admired I become
when my friends see me
dressed like this. And why
shouldn’t I be? With those
immaculate white shirts or
those special handmade
scarves …
• I am always original and I feel proud of
belonging to this part of the country,
Moldavia.
Thus I decided to study more about our region. It wasn’t very hard
to collect information as I found the perfect person to be both my
“model” and my “fashion designer”. And it is not my grandmother. It
is our grandmother, Victoria Lipan of Moldavia, the perfect person
who knows everything about our traditions and who knows best
how to keep them alive and how to put them in the best light. Do
you know who I am talking about? Of course you know….it’s Sofia
Vicoveanca!
I don’t even have to
talk to her face to face. I
feel like I have known her
for a lifetime. It is enough
to see her and you know
everything about Moldavia.
What a perfect model! Her
special clothes seem to fit
her perfectly. I can even tell
you her secret: that’s
because she knows how to
wear them and, the most
important reason, she loves
them and is proud of them.
It is the perfect combination
and she knows that.
• I hope she doesn’t mind the fact that I
borrowed some of her elements like the beautiful
shirt made of hemp, linen or cotton, beautifully
coloured in black, red or purple, with
geometrical, vegetal or zoomorphic ornaments.
What about fota or catrinta a woolen piece
wrapped up around waist. Winter is coming and I
would definitely wear a bundita, a sleeveless fur
coat with amazing embroideries. I won’t forget
about traista, an original woolen bag only in
black and white.
MODERN OR TRADITIONAL?
• This way I won’t have to choose between
them. I can make the perfect combination
to be ME!
