WHERE DOES TORONTO GETS ITS WATER FROM?

Toronto gets its water from lake Ontario. Toronto's

water is freshwater, because it gets water from lake
Ontario and lake Ontario's water is fresh water. Lake
Ontario has much more water than we need.
WHAT STEPS DOES TORONTO TAKE TO PROCESS WATER ?

There are 5 steps to process water:

• Screening- water from lake or rivers or the ground passes through a screen as it enters the
water treatment plant. When the water source is lake or river, the screen serves an important
function .
• Coagulation- treatment plant workers add alum and other chemicals to the water which cause
tiny sticky particles, or floc to form.
• Sedimentation- the water and floc flow into a sedimentation basin. As the water sits there, the
heavy floc settle to the bottom.
• Filtration- waters passes through layers of gravel, sand and perhaps charcoal, serve to filter
out, any remaining particles.
• Disinfection- water goes into a closed tank or reservoir chlorine or other
disinfecting chemicals kill any microorganisms or bacteria in the water and keep help
the water clean until distribution..
WHAT STEPS DOES TORONTO TAKE TO TEST WATER?

• Toronto's tap water is continuously tested to ensure it meets the

strict standard of Toronto public health, the province of Ontario
and the Government of Canada
• Drinking water of Toronto city is tested every six hours (over 6,000
times a year)
• Conducts more than 20,000 tests at the water treatment plants annually.
• Conducts 15,000 bacteriological tests on samples collected from the
water distribution system annually.
