Tourism

What is English language?
 English is a West Germanic language that was
FIRST spoken in early medieval England and is now
a global lingua franca.
 It is anofficial language of almost 60 sovereign
states, the most commonly spoken language in
the United Kingdom, the United States,
Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand.
 It is the second most common native language in
the world, after Mandarin .
 It is the most widely learned second
language and is an official language of the United
Nations, of the European Union, and of many
other world and regional international
organisations.
What is tourism?
 One of the world’s fastest growing
industries.
 Tourism is “a stay of one or more
nights away from home for holidays,
visits to friends or relatives, business
conferences or any other purpose,
except such things as boarding,
education, or semi-permanent
employment”
 Itbrings about benefits to economy,
generation of income, expansion of
employment opportunities, mobilization of
foreign exchange, social integration,
cultural transformation & development of
commerce.
 People travel for many reasons now-a-
days. These include- • Recreation Travel-
Holidays • Adventure and Sports Tourism-
Trekking, Mountaineering, etc. • Cultural
Tourism-Goa Carnival • Health Tourism-
Kerala, Spas, • Conference
English language is important
in tourism because :

 We already know that ENGLISH is an


international language that is useful to know
everywhere you go. So, everywhere you travel
EGLISH will help you.
 Tourism is related to all countries from the whole
world, so, to work in tourism you need to speak
fluently ENGLISH because >>>
 Interpersonal
communication skills
including, handling
telephone inquiries-
special listening skills
are necessary in
understanding
accents, tones,
intonations,
modulations of
voice, etc
 Telephone operators
& front desk
managers need to
be trained specially
to receive calls, in
English, and tourist
guides for interface-
care has to be
taken in specifying
travel destinations,
modes of transport,
tourist attractions, &
modes of currency,
etc.
 Communication
skills are an
important element
of hospitality
industry.
Understanding of
performance
expectations are
keys to the
achievement of
tourist satisfaction.
Good English
communication
during the study
will add value to
students'
education.
 In the tourism industry
supply and demand
side must
communicate
perfectly in order to
ensure quality and
needed performance
standards. In the
business tourism
practice oral
communication is a bit
higher than written
communication, but
both categories are
rated high
 The authoresses,
through a
questionnaire,
explore the
importance of
communication skills
(speaking, reading,
listening and writing)
in English language
among hospitality
employees and
students studying
business and tourism.
 Theimportance of good cooperation between
the language/hospitality teaching programes
and Tourism Authority is a high priority if the
development of steady all-year-round tourism is
to be a possibility.
In conclusion …
English is the dominant business
language and it has become almost a
necessity for people to speak English if
they are to enter a global workforce,
research from all over the world shows
that cross-border business
communication is most often
conducted in English. Its importance in
the global market place therefore
cannot be understated, learning English
really can change your life.
