Cell Types

Lesson 1.4

CLASSIFICATION OF DIFFERENT
TYPES OF CELLS
• The cell is the lowest level of structure capable of
performing all the activities of life. Most organisms are
made up of thousands or millions of cells and are referred
to as multicellular.

• Cells grouped together to form tissues and fulfill similar
function. Tissues are then grouped together to form an
organ, which perform a particular function like
movement.

. Epithelial tissue consists of single layer known as Simple epithelium while others composed of many layers known as stratified epithelium. One example is skin found in the uppermost layer of the body which made of epithelial cells.) EPITHELIAL TISSUE • Epithelial tissues form the covering of the surfaces of the body located both in internal and external parts. TISSUES IN ANIMALS 1. these are classified base on the cells arrangement according to layer. There are two groups of epithelial tissue.

Secretion. tongue FUNCTION: Absorption. bronchi. gallbladder. nose. long and rectangular shape with oblong nuclei or elongated nucleus contain goblet cells. excretory ducts. and Sensory . some glands. CLASSIFICATION OF CELLS IN EPITHELIAL TISSUE BASE ON SHAPE TYPE OF CELL: Columnar cell DESCRIPTION: Taller rather than wide column in shape. ears.

fallopian tubes. ciliary action . CLASSIFICATION OF CELLS IN EPITHELIAL TISSUE BASE ON SHAPE TYPE OF CELL: Ciliated columnar cell DESCRIPTION: Fine hair-like projection LOCATION: nose. uterus. egg cells FUNCTION: Move mucus and other substance across the cell.

free surfaces with hair-like projection. mouth FUNCTION: Filtration. ductus difference. trachea. nuclei seen at different level that contain goblet cells LOCATION: Ducts of large glands . CLASSIFICATION OF CELLS IN EPITHELIAL TISSUE BASE ON SHAPE TYPE OF CELL: Pseudostratifield columnar cell DESCRIPTION: False stratification or appearance. Absorption. throat. Secretion. and Ciliary action .

holds.) CONNECTIVE TISSUE • Connective tissues is a kind of tissue that use to connect. bind. and connects the tissues of the body. Cells of connective tissues are widely apart with each other in a form of matrix. protects the internal and delicate organs. TISSUES IN ANIMALS 2. This is the most vascularized and widely distributed inside the body. It gives the body many functions like supporting the muscles to produce movement. and support one part to another part of the body. . The connective tissue is characterized by a large percentage of living cells and non-living material known as matrix which is made of ground substance and fibrous structures.

provides lever. protects. storage. KINDS OF CONNECTIVE TISSUE AND THEIR TYPE OF CELL TISSUE TYPE: Bone Tissue SPECIALIZED CELL: Bone cell (osteocytes) MATRIX: Hard or calcified SPECIFIC FUNCTION: Support. hematopoiesis .

White blood cell. Platelets MATRIX: Fluid matrix (plasma) SPECIFIC FUNCTION: Transport . KINDS OF CONNECTIVE TISSUE AND THEIR TYPE OF CELL TISSUE TYPE: Blood Tissue SPECIALIZED CELL: Red blood cell.

) MUSCLE TISSUE • The muscle tissues are composed of muscle cells that designed for contraction and movement. Inside the muscle fiber or a muscle cell it consists of sarcolemma known as the cell membrane. . The muscle cells are also called muscle fibers. sarcoplasm as the cytoplasm of the muscle cell and the cell body that containing nucleus located at the center. TISSUES IN ANIMALS 3. These can help us to do the work.

Bundle forms. THREE TYPES OF MUSCLE CELLS IN THE MUSCLE TISSUES CELL TYPE: Striated/voluntary/skeletal muscle cells CELL DESCRIPTION: Long cylindrical shape.many striations LOCATION: Skeletal muscles . many nucleus .

THREE TYPES OF MUSCLE CELLS IN THE MUSCLE TISSUES CELL TYPE: Non. absent of striations LOCATION: Visceral/smooth muscle tissue .striated/involuntary/smooth muscle cells CELL DESCRIPTION: Spindle in shape of cells. one nucleus located at the center.

It transport nutrients from the blood vessels to neurons and also become as guard against toxin by creating barrier to many harmful substances.) NERVOUS TISSUE • Nervous tissues consists of two types of cells: conducting cells and supportive cells.  The supportive cells of the nervous system are kind of connective tissue.  Conducting cells or we can call it neurons are modified to respond to specific stimuli. . TISSUES IN ANIMALS 4.

from the CNS to the sensory receptors 2. 1. Afferent or Sensory neuron – this is concerned about the direction of the nerve impulse travels to the CNS. CLASSIFICATION OF NEURONS • Neurons are classified according to the function and structure. Interneurons or Association neurons .Neurons that carry impulses to the brain to the visceral or muscles and glands 3. Efferent neurons or motor .Neurons that connect between sensory and motor neurons following the neutral pathways .

.

Multipolar neuron – Many dendrties. Unipolar neuron – Single process emerging from the cell body 2. One axon . Bipolar neuron – One dendrite. One axon 3. Structural Classification Group neuron that can be classified according to the number of neurons 1.
