commercial and recreational activities
Today:
Humans undertake a variety of activities
Conservational in outdoor environments, which can be
broadly classified as either
Conservational, Recreational or
Commercial.
While many of these have negative
impacts on the environment, some are
Human used for preservation and restoration and
Impacts can have a positive impact.

Conservation is the preservation, protection, management or
restoration of the natural environment.
Overall, conservation activities are considered to have positive
impacts on outdoor environments.

Commercial activities are those that result in profit or financial gain as a result of
utilizing the natural environment.
Many commercial activities have negative impacts through their exploitation of the
environments resources (ie: mining). Tourism can result in positive impacts through
people becoming more educated about the environment they are in and therefore
more likely to be involved in caring for it.

Recreation is any activity undertaken for
enjoyment, amusement or pleasure.
In outdoor environments- recreational activities
are undertaken in two ways:
- Adventure based (the challenge presented by the
environment)
- Nature based (appreciation of the environment for what it is)
Some activities have the potential for adverse
impacts on the particular environment being used.
They can also lead to people developing a greater
understanding and appreciation of the
