Sentence Focus: Emphasizing

content words

In English, speakers use contrast to emphazise the

words they want their hearer to notice

But… why?

To be understood better To hear better

Don´t forget the pitch in stressed syllables!

Every single sentence has a focus word.

But… what´s a focus word?

The most important word and the

most emphasized

Focus and content words:

Content words are words that carry the most information in a sentence. Nous, main verbs, adverbs, adjectives, and

questions words are content words.

The function words are used in a

sentence, but It doesn't have the focus, only the focus word is usually a content word.
