What Is Product development?
 Product development in broad terms may be defined as the
process of conceptualizing, designing, creating, producing,
introducing and delivering new products and services to
consumers (new product development) or improving on the
old (product improvements).
Objectives
 1. To provide fresh user experience.
 2. To address a need of the consumers
 3. To provide solution to existing product in the market.
 4. To increase market share thus increasing sales and profit.
Necessity
 The sustenance and growth of the textile industry and by
extension the fashion industry depends greatly in the process of
product development as this is essentially its life-blood, for
reasons, the least of which is the dynamic and ever-changing
demands and trends which are characteristic of the industry -
consumer demands are in a constant state of flux. Therefore,
without the implementation of this all-important process by any
company in the industry, in two words: competitive
sustenance, it runs the risk of its activities quickly grinding to a
halt and possibly dying off.
Steps In Product Development
 1. Generating the idea for a product or service.
 2. Idea Screening
 3. Testing the concept.
 4. Business & market analysis for distribution
 5. Product development
 6. Commercialization.
Product Development for a Basic
Garment
 Step-1: Buyer Meeting
 The factors mainly
considered are:
 1. The season
 2. The target market
 3. The garment design
 4. Budget
 1.Season:
 Spring/Summer/Fall—
Lighter/ Heavier Fabric

 2. The target market

 Fast Fashion / Slow Fashion

Market
 3. The Garment design
 Classic Design /
Contemporary Design
 Regular / Fashionable
accessories

 4. Budget
 Depending on the above
factors choose a budget for
the garment
Step-2 : Designing
 Factors to consider:
 1. Fabrication
 Fabric type / weight /
drape/ hand feel /
shrinkage
 2. Size specification
/Standard Body
Measurement
 3. Pattern making
 Basic Block / Working
Pattern

 4. Accessories selection
 Button/ Rivet/ Zipper /
Sewing thread etc.
Step-3: Developing a Tech Pack
 Include:
 Product identification number
 Size Chart
 Sample size & colour
 Material Name & Specification
 Design
 Colour combination
 Placement of parts &
components.
 Wash
 Finishing
How to develop a Tech Pack
Step-4: Salesman sample
Development
 Also known as SMS sample in many buying houses.
 Sample made in advance of a season or two by buyer to
forecast the sale of a garment or its market interest.
 Mainly made by the manufacturers.
 Buyer normally pay 4-5 times of the actual price of the
salesman sample due to the shipment difficulties of the small
accessories amount & high production cost in sampling
section.
Step-5: Initial Costing
 Depending on the salesman sample an initial costing is
created by buyer for that specific garment.
 That costing is saved for future reference if the salesman
sample goes for production in the near future.
 The initial costing works as a benchmark for the buyer for
finalizing the production cost fot bulk order.
Step-6 : Store All the Data
 Store all the data gathered in the above process.
 Keep every approval & design from this process for future
reference.
 Depending on this process place order to manufacturer/
vendor.
