pieces together, to pour into molds and to decorate clay
pieces.

and used to hand build clay projects.

CLAY THAT IS STIFF ENOUGH TO HOLD ITS FORM,
WET ENOUGH TO ATTACH PIECES

4 ) BONE DRY- COMPLETELY DRY CLAY AND
READY TO BE FIRED. (CLAY IS IN IT’S MOST FRAGILE STATE
WHEN IT IS BONE DRY.)
GREENWARE: UNFIRED CLAY PIECE
KILN: A FURNACE MADE OF HEAT RESISTANT MATERIALS
USED FOR FIRING CLAY
BISQUEWARE: ONCE FIRED CLAY PIECE
FUNCTIONAL: A CERAMIC FORM MEANT TO BE USED AS
A CONTAINER, MAY BE A VASE, DISH, CUP, PITCHER,
WHISTLE, RATTLE, ETC.
NON-FUNCTIONAL: A CERAMIC FORM MEANT
TO BE APPRECIATED, USED AS A DECORATION.

CLAY HAND BUILDING TECHNIQUES
Pinch Pot: roll a
ball in the palm of
your hands, press
thumb into the
center of the ball
and pinch the pot
as you rotate it in
your hands.
COIL: ROLL LONG SNAKE SHAPED COILS USING THE PALMS
OF YOUR HAND ROLLING THE CLAY ON THE DESK. ATTACH
COILS TOGETHER USING SLIP AND SCORE TECHNIQUE OR BY
FUSING TILL YOU CREATE A SCULPTURE.
SLAB: PRESS CLAY FLAT IN HANDS THEN FURTHER
FLATTEN PIECE BY THROWING ON A FLAT SURFACE THEN
ROLL OUT FLAT BETWEEN 2 BOARDS TILL CLAY IS EVEN
THICKNESS. CUT OUT SHAPES, WAIT TILL SHAPES ARE
LEATHER HARD THEN ATTACH PIECES USING SLIP, SCORE OR
AND FUSE TECHNIQUES.
