PROCESS

Thermoplastic modeling material, (0.70" d i a.) is fed into the temperature-controlled FDM extrusion head and .heated to a semi-liquid state. The head extrudes and deposits the material in ultra-thin layers onto a fixtureless base. The material solidifies, laminating to the preceding layer.

SUPPORTS
Support Works generates supports if needed. Tool path data is then downloaded to the FDM system.

FUSED DEPOSITION MODELING

FUSED DEPOSITION MODELING IN STRATASYS INC.

Company: Stratasys Inc. Process: Model is built using a thin filament of thermoplastic polymer. In this machine a thin filament is heated and passed through a fine nozzle. Movement of nozzle forms a layer which is solidified. Temperature of the process is around 400 °C. Thickness of model being built is approximately O.25mm. FDM uses a "QUICKSLICE" software. 50% of the market share is with stratasys

Materials

Investment casting wax Machinable wax Plastic polymers ABS Polyamide plastic polymer Polyolefin plastic polymer

Advantages

Easy to change the materials in the machine. Simple and small size of machine. Process is fast for thin walled or hollow parts. There is a good variety of materials available. Cheaper process. Non toxic materials Model can be used as an investment castings pattern

Disadvantages

Limited to low temperature materials. Only for plastic polymers. Support structures are required but detachable. The parts have poor strength in the vertical direction. When large dense parts to be made process requires more time.
