Challenges for Singapore
 Despite of getting plenty of sun, it doesn’t have large
tracts of land for solar farms or bio fuels.
 Doesn’t have regular winds.
 Doesn’t have any geothermal resources.
 Its waters are too busy for tidal power projects.
 Doesn’t hold much promise as a renewable energy or
clean tech leader.
 Limited land availability poses a threat to waste
disposal system.
The Singapore Plan 2012
Singapore’s green plan was conceptualised to envision an
environmentally conscious nation promoting resource conservation
and clean technology to protect both local and global environments.
Key Measures in Singapore Green Plan are:

 Averting Wasteland : Increase the overall waste recycling rate from


40% in 2000 to 60% by 2012.
 Living in harmony with nature: Reservation of land for parks, green
linkages and monitoring of indigenous plants & animals.
 Ensuring clean air: Encourage the usage of clean fuel & To
improve carbon intensity by 25% from 1990 levels by 2012.
 Keeping the water flowing: Increase supply of water from process
like desalination and water reclamation, to at least 25% of
Singapore’s water demand. Ensure that water quality continues to
meet international standards. Reduce domestic water consumption
to 155L per person per day by 2012.
Key Measures in Singapore Green Plan are:

 Public health: Organize health programmes to make Singapore free


from epidemic & increase the life expectancy & decrease infant
mortality.
 Forging strategic partnerships: Increase the public awareness to
build green and sustainable environment by the means dedicated
organizations, green events etc.
 Enhancing external collaboration: Have close cooperation at
regional & international level to address the global environmental
issues.
 Innovating for sustainability: Discovering & adapting best
innovative practices for environmental developments. Eg. Cars
running on Hydrogen Fuel Cells.

Government Agencies working on Green Lion City

1.Public Utility Board: Even before independence ,


PUB was established as the National water Agency in
May 1963.

Aim: Efficient collection, production, distribution


and reclamation of water in Singapore.

Achievements:
•Bukit Timah Flood alleviation scheme 1966.
•The first Clean Singapore plan Oct 1968.
•Marina Barrage in Mar 2005.
•Hawker’s Settlement.
•Stockholm Industry Award in 2007.
2.Ministry Of Environment: Established in September 1972,
It has been the key player for sustaining Clean and Green
Singapore. Renamed as Ministry of environment and water
resources in 2004

Aim: To deal with pollution control, Public Hygiene and


environmental health.

Achievements:
• Completion of Key water resources in May 1975
• Launched Singapore river clean up plan in Oct 1977.
• Launched Waste Incineration program in 1979.
• Educational campaign in Clean and green Singapore in
1990.
• Launched Green Singapore Plan 2012 on 20th August 2002.
3.National Environment Agency: OnJuly 1 2002 NEA
was formed under as the management body of MEV
to focus on the implementation of environmental
policies.

Aim: To implement policies for Air Pollution, Energy


conservation, Climate Change
Environment Planning , Monitoring and research,
Pollution Control, Food Hygiene and Public
cleanliness.

Achievements:
• launched the NATIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE
STRATEGY in 2008.
• Launch of ABC waters in 2007.
• Launch of National Climate change Strategy in 2007.
