Compression Test

Of
Concrete Cylinder
(Reference : ASTM C39 For Cylinder)

What Is Compressive Strength?

 Compressive strength is the capacity of a

material or structure to withstand loads
tending to reduce size, as opposed to
tensile strength, which withstands loads
tending to elongate.
Why do we use concrete cylinder for
compressive test?

 The stress distribution on horizontal planes in a

cylinder is more uniform than of a specimen of
square cross section.
 The strength of concrete cylinder is less
influenced by the properties of coarse
aggregate used in the matrix.
 Their failure is less affected by the end restraint
of the specimen.
Stress/Strain curve for concrete cylinder

The stress-strain relationship of concrete

cylinder which is a combination of
aggregate and paste together shows a
curve relationship. This due to the
development of micro cracks at the
interface of the aggregate and paste. The
stress-strain curve continues to bend faster
than increase of stress.
Experimental Apparatus

 Compression Testing Machine

 Concrete Cylinder. (Diameter 6”,Height 12”)
 Capping Instrument (Melt Sulphur,Cap)
Experimental Procedure

 Measurement of the specimen length, diameter and

cross sectional area.
 Before placing the specimen on testing machine, the
upper surface should be level thus the load can be
distributed uniformly.
 Place specimen on the compression testing machine.
 The dial gauge of testing machine shows how much
force is being applied on the cylinder as the cylinder is
being deflected.
 Collect dial gauge reading after some interval.

Significance Of This Experiment

 Compression testing provides data on the durability

and safety of materials.
 To aid the design process.
 To reduce material costs and achieve construction
goals.
 To determine how a material reacts when it is
compressed, squashed or crushed under a
compressive load.
