Volume

Volume

Perimeter of a Rectangle

• The perimeter is the distance around

a figure.

• The formulas are:

P = 2L + 2W

15 in.

P = 2 (L + W)

• Measured in single

8 in.

units.

P = 16in. + 30 in. P = 2 (23 in.)

P = 46 in. P = 46 in.

Perimeter of a Square

• The perimeter is the distance around

a figure.

• The formula is:

P = 4s

• Measured in single

units.

P = 4s

P = 4(9in.) or 4 x 9 in.

9 in.

P = 36 in.

Perimeter of a Triangle

• The perimeter is the distance around

a figure.

• Add up all three sides. P = A + B + C

• Measured in single

units.

5 inches 5 inches

P=A+B+C

P = 5 in. + 5 in. + 5 in.

P = 15 in. 5 inches

Area of a Rectangle

to cover the surface of a figure.

• The formula is: A = L x W

• Area is measured in square units.

9 in.

A=LxW

A = 14 in. x 9 in.

14 in.

A = 126 square in.

Area of a Square

• The number of square units needed

to cover the surface of a figure.

• The formula is: A = s² or A = s x s

• Area is measured in square units.

A = s² A=sxs

A = 6 in.² A = 6 in. x 6 in.

6 in. A = 36 sq. in.A = 36 sq. in.

Area of a Triangle

• The number of square units needed

to cover the surface of a figure.

• The formula is: A =½bh or A = bh

2

• Area is measured in square units.

A =½bh

5 in. 5 in. A = ½(5 in. x 4 in.)

4 in. A = ½ (20 sq. in.)

A = 10 sq. in.

5 in.

Area of a Circle

• The number of square units needed

to cover the surface of a figure.

• The formula is: A = πr²

• Area is measured in square units.

A = πr²

r=4 cm

A = (3.14)(4cm) ²

A = (3.14)(16cm²)

A = 50.24cm²

Volume of Rectangular

Prism

• The volume is the amount of space

occupied by a three-dimensional

object.

• The formula is V = L x W x H

• Volume is measured in cubic units.

5 in. V=LxWxH

V = 5 in. x 2 in. x 5 in.

2 in. V = 10 sq. in. x 5 in.

5 in.

V = 50 cubic in.

Volume of Triangular Prism

1. How big is a Toblerone box (triangular prism) if its

triangular side has a base of 3 cm and a height of 4.5

cm and the box’s height is 25 cm?

V=bh/2 H

= [(3 cm)(4.5 cm)/2][25 cm]

= 168.75 cm³

Square-based pyramids

• Volume = 1/3 x (side of base)2 x

height of pyramid

• (V= 1/3 s²h)

V= 1/3 s²h

V= 1/3 (4cm)²(3cm)

V = 1/3 (16cm²)(3cm)

V = 1/3 (48cm³)

V = 16cm³

Rectangle-based pyramid

• Volume=1/3 x length of the base x

width of the

base x height of pyramid

• (V=1/3 lwh)

V=1/3 lwh

V = 1/3 (10in)(8in)(6in)

V = 1/3 (480in³)

V = 160in³

Triangle-based pyramid

Volume of Cylinder

• The volume is the amount of space

occupied by a three-dimensional

object.

• The formula is V = πr²x L

• Volume is measured in cubic units.

V = πr² x L

V = (3.14)(5cm)² x 10cm

V= (3.14)(25cm²) x 10cm

V = 78.5cm² x 10cm

V = 785cm³
