INTRODUCTION

 WHAT IS PENETRATION?
 Items -are the mechanical, electrical or structural items
that pass through an opening in a wall or floor, such
as pipes, electrical conduits, ducting, electrical
cables and cable trays, or structural steel beams and
columns.
 When these items pierce a wall or floor assembly, they
create a space between the penetrant and the
surrounding structure, which can become an avenue
for the spread of fire between rooms or floors.
GMR REQUIREMENTS
 All floor penetrations must be protected with robust
covers to prevent the fall of materials or persons through
them 
 Where penetration covers are installed in areas with
exposure to traffic, e.g. MEWPs, these shall be engineered
to withstand both the dead and live loads imposed. Other
means of protection provided can include hard
barricades to prevent access by equipment.
 Penetration covers are to have the words “HOLE BELOW
- DO NOT REMOVE” painted on. Site shall assess and
decide on relevant languages.
 Hard edge protection shall be a top rail at 1000mm -
1200mm with a mid-rail at half the height of the top rail
and a 150mm (min. height) toe board.
 A PtW is required to be approved by Lendlease prior to any coring
or cutting through concrete floors OR cutting out the mesh.

REMOVAL OF PENETRATION COVER
 Penetration covers are to be removed just before the
installation of the service.

 As far as reasonably practicable penetrations are to have
mesh cast in as per this GMR.
 Cutting of mesh will require prior Lendlease approval via
PTW for Concrete Coring and Cutting.
 Fall protection shall be installed prior to mesh cut-out.
 Whenever possible leave mesh in position (in these situations
initially install galvanised mesh)
 Cut mesh immediately prior to installation of service
 If there is the need to cut mesh 250mm square or more, provide
in this preference order:
 Protection barrier (hard protection and toe boards) to prevent a
person or materials from falling
 A catch deck
 A fall restraint system
