Freshwater scarcity in the Charente river catchment

Pertuis Charentais policy issue : freshwater quantitative management

Basic needs in summer :

- the availability of drinking water
- The good ecological status of ecosystem

Freshwater scarcity in Pertuis Charentais

The regional plan for water management (SDAGE) and the "Water
shortage Management Plan” (PGE) have led to the hierarchy of the
uses of freshwater :

1) good ecological status of the coastal ecosystems

2) availability of drinking water for households (and tourists)
3) other uses: agriculture, shellfish farming…

This policy issue has been chosen by the stakeholder group around

the current debate of :

•modifying the “authorized volumes of water” for each uses (drinking
water, irrigation)
•improving restriction rules.

for a "promising" collaborative scenario

SSA10

► Where did the 12 m3/s come from ?

CONCLUSIONS

► At this stage of the project, we were pleased with the positive feedbacks
from the participant stakeholder and scientific group.

•The water management agency (EPTB) for the Charente river

foresees a high potential for exploration of different management
scenarios and is now highly involved in the continuing development
of the model.
•They are also very interested by the communication possibilities of the
tool for future discussions and negotiations with other management
actors and local farmers.

► Perspectives :
London 21-23 September 2010

-Appropriation of the model by managers

-Forecasting model for weekly management of irrigation
