LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) 2/23

Introduction
• LED is an acronym for light emitting diode
• A light emitting diode is a two LED semiconductor
light source
• It is an PN junction diode
• Which emits light when activated by a suitable
voltage is applied the leads

SYMBOL OF LED

LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) 5/23

Identifying cathode and anode

• Cathode lead of LED bulb is always shorter than

anode
• Use a digital multimeter

LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) 6/23

Why are LED special purpose of diode
• LED are the special type of diode because they are
not made from silicon or Germanium
• made from gallium, phosphorous By varying the
quantity , it can produce a different type of colors
By varying the wavelength i.e to form colors like red,
green, blue & yellow

CONSTRUCTION
• The PN junction of LED bulb is enclosed by a
transparent hard plastic epoxy resin hemispherical
shaped shell or body
• This protect the LED from shock and vibrations

Working principle of LED

• Electroluminescence
phenomenon into which light emits from the semiconductor under
the influence of electric field

Semiconductor and colors

• PHOSPHORUS –RED LIGHT

• GALLIUM PHOSPHIDE –GREEN LIGHT
• ALUMINUM INDIUM GALLIUM PHOSPHIDE –
YELLOW COLOR AND ORANGE COLOR

TYPES OF LED
• Traditional inorganic LEDs
• Multi color LED
• Organic LED
• Miniature
• High power

Applications of LED
• Indicators and signals
• Lighting
• Data communication and other signaling

LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) 15/23

Indicators and signals
• The low energy consumption , low
maintenance and small size of LEDs
• LED to use as status indicators and displays
on a variety of equipment and insttalations
• Stadium airports
• Railway stations
• Trains
• Buses

Lighting
• LEDs are now used commonly in all market
areas from commercial to home use:
• Standard lighting , stage theatrical ,
architectural , public installations

LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) 17/23

Data communications and other
signaling
• Light can be used to transmit data and analog
signals
• Listening device in many theaters and similar
spaces use arrays of infrared LEDs to send
sound to listeners receivers
• LEDs are used to send data over many types
of fiber optics cable, from digital audio the
very high bandwidth fiber links that from the
internet backbone

Advantage
• Easy controlled and programmed
• Large life span
• High efficiency
• Low radiated heat
• High level of brightness
• High intensity
• High reliability
• No UV rays
• Low voltage and current
• Less wiring is required
• Low maintence cost

LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) 19/23

Disadvantage

• High initial price

• Light quality
• Temperature dependence
• Voltage sensitivity
• Non reparation

LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) 20/23

Conclusion
• LEDs are the essential element in electronics
• They have different applications in
communication field
• The construction and working is very simple
