POLLUTION

By Hasini
Pollution
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause
adverse change.

Pollution is often classed as point source or non point source pollution.

Major forms of pollution includes;

• Nature Pollution
• Air Pollution
• Water Pollution
• Plastic
• Soil Pollution
• Light Pollution
• Noise Pollution
• Visual Pollution
Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems facing humanity and other
life forms.

Environmental pollution is a global problem and is common to both developed as well as

developing countries.

Any use of natural resources at a rate higher than natures capacity to restore itself can
result in pollution such as;

• Air Pollution
• Water Pollution
• Noise Pollution
• Soil/Land pollution
Air pollution is a mix of particles and gases that can reach harmful concentrations both inside and
outside. It’s effect can range from higher disease risk to rising temperatures. Soot smoke ,mold ,pollen,
methane and carbon dioxide are just few examples of common pollutants.
Incidents occur due to air pollution are,

• Gas flare
• Burn pit
• Wildland fire emission
• Mist
• Green house gases
• Smoke
This occurs when harmful substances such as chemicals or micro organisms contaminate to a
stream ,river ,lake ,ocean ,aquifer. Degrading water quantity and rendering it toxic to human as
well as to environment.

British poet W.H.Aden once noted,

“thousands have lived without love ,not one without water.”

It is our prime responsibility to protect water resources.

Land pollution is the destruction and contamination of the land through the direct and
indirect actions of humans .The pollution results in changes to the land such as soil erosion.

• De-forestation and soil erosion

• Agricultural failure
• Land fills
What can we do to prevent
environmental pollution
How to reduce or prevent environmental pollution
1. Prevention of smoking.
2. Driving electric or hybrid car at least one that uses unleaded gasoline.
3. Choose to walk or ride a bicycle whenever it is possible.
4. Never use open fires to dispose of waste ,specially chemicals and plastics.
5. Start composting leaves and clipping from your yard and food scraps from your kitchen to
reduce waste while improving your soil.
6. Always borrow a bag when shopping.
7. Always buy local foods and goods ,in this manner usage of fuel for transporting goods can be
minimized.
8. Take care to properly dispose pet’s waste.
9. Do not litter.
