OBJECTIVE

TO IDENTIFY THE PRESENCE

OF DIFFERENT ELEMENTS
PROCLAIMED IN HEALTH
DRINKS (HORLICKS).
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
CONTENTS
1. Theory

2. Apparatus

3. Chemicals required

4. Detection of pH

5. Test for carbohydrates

6. Test for the presence of various

anions
7. Test for the presence of various
cations
THEORY
CONTENTS :
 Micro nutrients : (A, B6, B12 ,C ,D ,E
etc. ) , copper , folic acid , iron , selenium
,zinc .
 Macro nutrients :phosphorus , calcium ,
magnesium , sulphur etc.
 Others : protein , carbohydrate , fibre ,
sugar.

BENIFITS AND PURPOSES CLAIMED :

 Increase the density of minerals such as
calcium in bones to give children bigger and
stronger bones.
 Increase lean tissue, making muscles
stronger.
 Helps improvement in concentration.
 More haemopoietic nutrients in blood and
improvement in levels of blood health
related nutrients (vitamin a & folate ) in
circulation.
 Increase fat mass , making children
stronger.
APPARATUS
REQUIRED

1. Test tube
2. Test Tube Holder
3. Test Tube Stand
4. Distilled water
5. Beaker
6. Burner
7. pH paper
8. Tripod Stand
9. China Dish
10. Wire Gauge
11. Water Bath
CHEMICALS
REQUIRED

 SULPHURIC ACID( DILUTE & CONC.)

 HCl (DILUTE)
 H2S (GAS)

 CONC. HNO3

 SOLID AMMONIUM CHLORIDE(NH4Cl)

 AMMONIUM HYDROIDE(NH4OH)

 FEHLING B SOLUTION
DETECTION OF pH
EXPERIMENT

PROCEDURE :
small samples of HORLICKS was taken
in a test tube. The change in colour of
pH was noticed and was compared with
the standard pH scale.

OBSERVATION :
colour observed of pH paper on
dropping a drop of solution :

RESULT :
Horlicks is in nature.
TEST FOR CARBOHYDRATE
USING FEHLING’S TEST

APPARATUS REQUIRED :test tube ,beaker ,

burner, water bath.

CHEMICALS REQUIRED : distilled water,

Fehling A (17.5gm CuSo4 + 250 ml H2O + H2SO4(2
drops),
Fehling B( 86.5gm sodium potassium tartrate + 30gm
NaOH
+
250ml H2O)
THEORY :

TARTARATE ION

CHO--(CHOH)4--CH2OH + Cu(OH)2 + NaOH

------------
(carbohydrate)
COO—Na+--(CHOH)4—CH2OH
+ H2O +Cu2O
(sodium salt of gluconic acid)

(RED PPT)

END POINT : Red colour PPT.

PROCEDURE : Keep the Horlicks solution and
