NOUN CLAUSE

Noun Clause

• Noun clause is a group of words that includes a


subject and a verb

• Noun clause is a clause that functions as a noun, it


can be used in a sentence as an object of a verb or
an object of a preposition
HELLO!

Noun clause usually begin with words called relative


pronouns such as how, that, what, whatever, when, where,
which, who, whoever, and why.

Examples:
oWhat she said was true
oThe worker is afraid that he will get fired
oThe teacher asked me who Niels Bohr was

Noun Clauses can have five
grammatical functions in a sentence

As a subject of a sentence

Example :
• What Megan wrote surprised her family
• How the boy behaved was not very polite

As the object of a verb

Examples :
⊡ She didn’t realize that the directions were wrong
⊡ He didn’t know why the stove wasn’t working

As an object of a preposition

Example :
• Please think about what I said
• They are talking over how much they will spend for the
car

Subject Complement
•Subject?
⊡ A subject is a part of a sentence that contains the person or thing performing the
action (or verb) in a sentence.

•Complement?
⊡ a complement is a constituent of a clause, such as a noun phrase or adjective phrase,
that is used to predicate a description of the subject or object of the clause.

•Subject Complement?
⊡ is the adjective, noun, pronoun that follows linking verb.

•Noun Clause as Subject Complement?


⊡ A noun clause that modify,describe or complete the subject of a clause.
Example

Carlie's problem was that she didn't practice enough.


Darla's excuse for being late was that she forgot to set her
alarm.

Adjective Complement
•Adjective?
⊡ An adjective is a word that describes a noun.

•Complement?
⊡ a complement is a constituent of a clause, such as a noun phrase or adjective
phrase, that is used to predicate a description of the subject or object of the clause.

•Adjective Complement?
⊡ An adjective complement is a functional part of a sentence that completes, or
complements, the adjective.

•Noun clause as Adjective Complement?


⊡ A noun clause that modify or describe the adjective of a clause.
Example
Her family was happy when Meg returned home.
The child is sad that his stomach hurts.

Ask some similar questions as before.


"When was her family happy?" ("Happy" is an adjective for
the family.) And the answer to that is "when Meg returned
home."
"Why is the child sad?" ("Sad" is an adjective for the child.)
And the answer to that is "that his stomach hurts."
