STUDY ON THE STATUS OF NOISE POLLUTION LEVEL IN

BANGALORE CITY
“A prospective study on noise pollution caused due to various
sources such as automobiles, industrialization, man made
noise etc, and its impact on human health and possible

 INTRODUCTION
 This study emphasizes on the problems of the
unwanted sound signals which comes with in the
desired band of frequencies called noise
 When the noise exceed certain limits in the
environment, it is termed as noise pollution which is un
reasonably disturbs human daily life.
 Noise pollution is any unwanted or offensive sound
that creates pollution, leads to socio- behavioral and
health related problems in human life.
 Here is an attempt made in city of Bangalore to predict
and access the ambient noise level and over come the
above said problems.
 It also covers the various health hazards caused due to
noise pollution and the remedial measures that can be
taken to over come these problems.
 INTRODUCTION
 Bangalore the capital city of Karnataka state is also
called as Garden city, Silicon Valley of India with
wonderful climate as well, developed residential layouts,
commercial complexes and industrial areas with
beautiful infrastructure.
 It is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Hence
every one prefers to settle in Bangalore to lead a safe,
comfortable and luxurious life.
 But unfortunately this it self is the root cause for the
noise pollution due to the innumerable movement of
people crowd, transport vehicles,, use of public address
systems, burning of crackers, use of Radio & Television,
industries, Aircraft, train, entertainment malls etc. The
noise pollution may hamper the present and future
generation.
 INTODUCTION
 The urbanization and unsustainable development in
the last few decades has brought about rapid changes
in human environment. These rapid changes which
happened over a time period without much planning
are the major sources of pollutant

 Bangalore is a commercial and industrial center of the

state of Karnataka. Due to information technology
boom and rapid urbanization, the city has developed
without much planning and master plan of the city
was neglected.
 INTRODUCTION

 World Health Organization stated that “Noise must

be recognized as a major threat to human well-being.
 W H O has documented seven categories of adverse
effects of noise pollution on human health as follows.
 Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL),
 Mental health disturbances.
 Interference with spoken communication.
 Impairment of Task Performance
 Negative Social Behaviour and Annoyance Reactions.
 Sleep Disturbances
 Cardiovascular Disturbances.
 Physics of Sound
 Sound pressure level (SPL) is represented in a
logarithmic manner and sound levels are measured
on a logarithmic decibel scale (dB), which
corresponds fairly well to the human hearing
response.
 The zero dB end of the scale corresponds to a
pressure of about 0.00002 Nm-2 and a value of 120
dB corresponds to about 20 Nm-2 (a level at which
pain will be experienced).

of sound at threshold level (89).

Human hearing extends in the frequency range
20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

 Damage to health begins at 75bB.

 Hearing damage begins at 90 dB and can be

permanent with one exposure of 120 dB or more.

 The average decibel levels at 70-80 dB where damage

to physical, psychological and communicative health
begins.
 Motivation
• The problem with noise pollution though is that it is
not only a complex issue but also a highly persistent
one. As a public nuisance concern, it has been
steeped in the awareness of the public
consciousness for millennia but has not really been
taken seriously enough by policymakers who have
tended to prioritize other seemingly more pressing
environmental issues.
• And so, despite centuries of scientific endeavor
along with attempts to control and mitigate noise,
the problem continues to rumble on. Indeed, the rise
in the ownership and use of private transport over
the last century has arguably turned the rumble
of noise pollution into something of a roar.
 Objectives of The Study
 To study the reference levels of noise at different
zones in Bangalore city prescribed by central
pollution control board (CPCB) under the guide
lines of National ambient air quality programme
(NAAQP).
 To measure the actual levels of the noise pollution in
the chosen four different zones such as Sensitive,
residential, commercial and Industrial zone.
 To compare the existing noise level with the
standard reference noise levels prescribed by CPCB
in the chosen zones.
 To study the cause of noise pollution due to various
sources. Assessing probable factors contributing to
the prevailing noise levels and to locate the
problematic areas having noise levels higher than
the prescribed limits.
 Objectives Of The Study

 To study the harmful effects of noise pollution on

human health and other living beings like birds and
animals.
 To provide recommendations for preventing and
controlling the noise pollution to overcome harmful
effects.
 To enhance the application of GIS and GPS
techniques for monitoring and analyzing noise
measurements.
 To bring awareness among people to reduce and
avoid the formation of unwanted noise which is
harmful to living beings.
 Material and Methods
• Noise measurements have been done using
microprocessor based digital noise measuring
instruments SL 4001 and HT-80A.
 Material and Method
For measurements four zones are selected namely
Sensitive zone
Residential zone
Commercial zone
Industrial zone.
• Time of Noise Measurement:
• Day time: 9.00AM to 11.00AM (Two hours)
• [Daytime measurements means from 6.00AM to
10.00PM]
• Night time: 10.00PM to 12.00PM (Two hours)
• [Night time measurement means from 10.00PM
to 6.00AM
 Material and Method
The following areas are chosen for the noise pollution
level measurements
• Sensitive zone : Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health
Care [NIMHANS National institute of mental health and neurosciences].
This hospital is situated 100 - 120 meters from the main road. Measurements
have been done at different locations inside the hospital.
• Residential zone: Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Mysore Road.
• A thick populated residential area in Mysore Road. Chosen four different
locations in this layout for noise measurement
• Commercial zone: Chikpet, BVK Iyangar Road.
• Where shopping complex, Malls, Bus stands, cinema theatres, Markets,
offices etc; are situated in this limit.
• Industrial zone: Peenya industrial area
• Manufacturing industries, heavy trucks movement, sound from heavy
machines
• ACE manufacturing system, TVS cross, Jalahally circle and surrounding four
places [Near CAAQMS of CPCB]
 Material and Method
 Noise level measurements with the time lap of
5minutes have been made by fixing the device at a
height of 1.5 m from the ground level.
 Measurements in sensitive and residential areas
are recorded from June 2016 to May 2017 where
as in commercial and industrial areas from June
2017 to May 2018.
 The data recording is made on every day basis at
constant time interval and the measurements so
recorded are as shown in data sheets.
