EQUIPPING OF DEVELOPMENT ENDS

OBJECTIVE

To provide construction crews , developers and Supervisors with guide lines to ensure construction
work is done in a safe and effective manner.

5.4.1 PIPE AND CABLE SUSPENSION

1. Pipes and cables will be suspended from “U” hooks, screwed to re - bar as shown in the sketches.

2. 10mm Chain and 4mm wire will be used to suspend ventilation columns (see sketch for details).
Ventilation columns 570mm in diameter or greater will be suspended with 10mm chain only,
i.e. no wire will be used.

3. All steel pipes used in decline section will be suspended from hooks every 3,0m by means of
10mm chain.

4. Drinking water columns will be suspended below the water column and wire will be used for
this purpose. The spacing of the wire ties must not exceed 3,0m.

5. Cables will be tied to 12mm straining wire by means of baling wire. The straining wire will be
threaded through “U” bolts, tensioned and clamped with crossby clamps.

6. Crossovers will be constructed by a boiler maker, construction Team Supervisor and the PTV
crew. Pipes will be suspended by bearers chained to hangingwall. The planning and
installation of crossovers will be done weekly.

7. Persons working on columns will observe the rules set out in utility vehicle codes of practice.

8. Operators of trackless equipment working in the vicinity where construction work is in

progress must be informed of work being undertaken by the Team Supervisor in charge of
the task.

9. It is the duty of the Shift Supervisor / Shaft Foreman in charge of the construction crews to
ensure that the correct tools and equipment are available to perform the work in a safe and
effective manner.

10. Before crews leave work site, the air, water or ventilation closed or switched off to do
extensions or repairs must be restored and checked that it is functioning normally.

EQUIPPING OF DEVELOPMENT ENDS

5.4.2 GENERAL PIPING GUIDE LINES

1. In all main development (Roadways and Ramps / Declines) only steel columns will be used.
The sizes of columns used will be :

Air column 200mm

Water column 100mm

2. The distance from the development face to these columns must not exceed 30m.

3. Columns for stoping will not be further than the 2 nd holing to the stope face and will be
100mm for air and 50mm for water. Pump columns in ASD’s or Roadways must not be
further than 30m from the advancing stope face. Pump columns must be fitted with non
return valves.

4. Where spindle valves are fitted in columns the Shift Supervisor in charge of the area will
ensure that spindles are greased regularly.

5. Plastic piping may only be used in temporary applications. Only PVC (unplasticised
polyvinyl chloride) SABS 1283 specification pipes may be used.Where plastic pipes are
used the following precautions must be observed :

i. The pipes must be suspended 50cm or more below the hangingwall or laid on the footwall.
This precautionary measure is to ensure that the piping lies below the rooflayer of hot air
which forms during a fire.

ii. Firebreaks must be included in runs of plastic piping at intervals of 50m.

iii. Plastic pipes must be installed away from electric cables and must not be closer than 50cm
from electric cable.

iv. Fire extinguishing equipment must be available wherever bundles of plastic piping are
stored or transported.

v. When more than one plastic column is suspended in an excavation, they must not be
grouped together . They must be separated by a distance of one metre or more from each
other.

vi. Firebreaks must be alongside each other and not staggered along the columns.

vii. Compressed air columns supplying Refuge Chambers must be constructed exclusively
with steel pipes.

5.4.3 CROSS DRAIN CONSTRUCTION

1. Immediately below every Roadway or ASD a cross drain will be installed in the ramp or
decline to divert drilling water into either the pump column or a drain.

2. The cross drain will be installed once the drive or Roadway has reached 15m from the edge
of the decline or ramp.

3. The permanent installation of the made up RSJ cross drain will be planned and installed when
pipe cross over is done.

4. The mud / sludge in each dam will be checked weekly by Artisan in charge of the pumps. His
findings will be reported at the weekly meeting and the Shaft Foreman will arrange loading
or cleaning of dams effected.

5. Where development is in progress the Supervisor in charge will ensure water is contained
between face and cross drains.

6. Water control requirements will be examined and discussed monthly at the development
planning.

5.4.4 ROADWAYS, DECLINES, RAMPS AND TIP AREAS

1. In all areas where persons are required to work (e.g. drain cleaners) the sidewalls will be
white washed to grade line.

2. All Roadways and Declines / Ramps will be equipped with lights. These will be 10m apart
and not further than 60 m from the working face.

3. The Drill Rig / Roof Bolter power source plug will be maintained at 30 m from the face by
the Electrician. (Plug to be provided at the end of the pipes.)

4. A concrete slab of 2,0 m x 3,0 m will be cast at each ASD / Roadways breakaway to mount
gully tanks.

5. Fan switches will be mounted on 50mm pipes concreted in at each breakaway . Where more
than one fan is operational and the switches are located in close proximity to each other -
each fan / switch will be identified and marked.

2. Weekend work will be discussed at TM3 meeting and detailed by the Shaft Foreman on the
weekend work schedule . The responsible Supervisor will ensure that all the required
information is provided to the Shaft Foreman before noon every Thursday.

3. The Developer / Shift Supervisor will ensure that the area is examined , made safe and
signed for prior to construction team commencing any work in the designated area.

4. When large diameter pipes or fans are to be suspended the Supervisor / Developer will ensure
that persons engaged in this work are persons who have been trained and found to be
competent to perform the task.

5. The Shaft Foreman will ensure that sub - station floors and bund walls are as per standard.
