What pushed Rizal to travel

 He was unhappy at the Dominican institution

 To observe keenly the life and culture,
languages and customs, industries and
commerce, and government and laws of the
European nations
Timeline of rizal’s Travel to Spain

3 May 1882
 He boarded the Spanish Streamer (SS)
Salvadora using a passport of Jose
Mercado, which was procured for him by
his uncle Antonio Rivera, father of Leonor
 He also befriended the ship Captain
named Donato Lecha from Asturias,

 He got seasick on board the boat.

 There are 16 passengers, including himself (5 or 6 ladies, children and gentlemen)
 Rizal was the only Filipino, the rest were Spaniards, British, and Indian Negros.

 The Salvadora docked at Singapore. He then stayed at Hotel de la

 Rizal boarded the ship Djemnah, which was a French steamer and
left Singapore for Europe..

Life in Madrid
 November 3, 1882, Rizal enrolled in the Universidad
Central de Madrid in two courses- Medicine and
Philosophy and Letters.
 He also studied painting and sculpture in the
Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and took
lessons in French, German, and English under
private instructors.
 he visited the art galleries and museums and read
books on all subjects in order to broaden his
cultural background.
 Rizal joined the Circulo Hispano-Filipino (Hispano-
Philippine Circle) It is composed of both Filipinos
and Spaniards and wrote a poem entitled “Me Piden Circulo Hispano-

 Rizal joined the Masonic lodge called Acacia in Madrid. become a
Master Mason at Lodge Solidaridad.

 During Rizal’s first summer vacation in Madrid, he went to Paris
 Like all tourists, he enjoyed the attractive sights, the historical
places, etc. but unlike ordinary tourists, Rizal spent many hours in
Museums, Botanical gardens, Libraries, Art galleries, and Hospitals.

 Rizal finished his medical education with the degree of Licintiate in
Medicine .
June 1885
 Rizal awarded by the Unversidad Central de Madrid with the rating
of Sobresaliente or excellent.
Paris and Germany

 Rizal went to Paris and Germany in order to

specialized in ophthalmology .
 Dr. Loius de Weckert found Rizal such a
competent student and make him as his
clinical assistant.
 On February 1, 1886, He left Paris to
Germany in Heidelberg.
 Rizal wrote the poem “A Las Flores de
 Dr. Otto Becker is an German
ophthalmologist where Rizal worked -
University Eye Hospital.
