MIMO Principles
Consider wireless communication systems with multiple transmitting and/or
multiple receiving antennas.
When both transmitter and receiver sides have multiple antennas, these
systems are referred to as multiple-input, multiple output (MIMO) antenna
systems, or MIMO systems
 MIMO is an attractive solution for achieving high-speed wireless connections
over a limited amount of bandwidth.
MIMO offers improved transmission reliability through transmit and/or
receive diversity
 In fact, even when there is only one transmitting antenna, receive diversity can
be achieved through the use of multiple receiving antennas(SIMO).
transmit diversity can be achieved through the use of multiple transmitting
antennas (MISO)

MIMO Principles
Array and diversity gains increase coverage and QoS
Multiplexing gain increases spectral efficiency
Co–channel interference is reduced and cellular capacity increases
 MIMO technology has attracted attention in wireless
communications, since it offers significant increases in data
throughput and link range without additional bandwidth or transmit
power.
It achieves this by higher spectral efficiency (more bits per second
per Hertz of bandwidth) and link reliability or diversity (reduced
fading).
Several companies (Beceem Communications, Samsung, etc.) have
developed MIMO-OFDMA based solutions for IEEE 802.16e WIMAX
broadband mobile standard. All upcoming 4G systems will also
employ MIMO technology. Several research groups have
demonstrated over 1 Gbit/s prototypes.

MIMO SYSTEM MODEL

consider a narrowband MIMO wireless communication system with Nt transmitting
antennas and Nr receiving antennas. the channel is referred to as an Nt × Nr MIMO
channel. the MIMO system can be represented by a discrete-time model at time
index n

CHANNEL CAPACITY IN MIMO SYSTEM

Channel capacity is a fundamental performance indicator that describes the maximum
rate of data transmission that a channel can support with an arbitrarily small probability
of error incurred due to channel impairments.
Simulate SISO,SIMO,MISO,MIMO for channel capacity under AWGN and fading(slow
and fast)

DIVERSITY in MIMO SYSTEM

To guarantee a reliable communication in fading channels where the
transmitted signal is distorted, diversity techniques are deployed.
The key idea of diversity is to provide the receiver with multiple versions of the
transmitted signal.
If the diversity scheme is well designed, there is a high probability that at least
one version of the transmitted signal is not degraded severely by the channel.
Diversity deployed in three different approaches: time, frequency, and space.
 In time diversity, the same transmitted signal is sent out in different time slots.
In frequency diversity, the same transmitted signal is carried on a number of
different frequencies
 Space diversity is realized by deployingmultiple antennas for transmission or
(and) reception. Themultiple antennas are separated far enough in space
Simulate different types of diversity

standards will continue to use MIMO technology.

At present, the following standards with MIMO are being worked on:
• LTE Advanced :
The goal is to provide 1 Gbps at 100 MHz bandwidth in downlink direction.
• 1xEV-DO Rev. C:
The goal is to provide 18 Mbps at 1.25 MHz bandwidth in forward link.
• WiMAXTM 802.16m:
The goal is to provide 300 Mbps at 20 MHz bandwidth in downlink direction.
