Ecology

• What happens to the environment affects all

living things
• Ecology is the study of all living things in
relation to each other and the environment
– Helps people to better understand the
environment
– Teaches people how to protect it

Use and Misuse of Natural
Resources
• Natural resources are the substances that
are supplied by nature and needed for
survival
– Include air, water, soil, sun, plants, animals,
and fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas)
• Many natural resources are limited in supply
and cannot be renewed

Use and Misuse of Natural
Resources
• Pollution is the action or process of making
natural resources unsafe or unusable
– Smoke and exhaust causes the air to
become dirty and harmful to breathe
– Waste dumped into waterways harms fish
and animals
– Nuclear waste can pollute air, water, and soil

Did You Know?

• The United States Environmental

Protection Agency (EPA) creates laws to
protect the air, water, and other natural
resources.

Protect and Conserve Natural
Resources
• Sustainability – using a natural resource so
that it is not depleted or permanently
damaged
• Sustainability reduces pollution and helps to
keep the environment safe

continued

Protect and Conserve Natural
Resources
• Conserve – to save
• Using alternative energy sources helps to
conserve limited fossil fuels
– Hybrid engines in cars and trucks use much
less gas
– Wind turbines can produce electric power

Conserving Natural Resources
• Alternative energy – using energy from
renewable resources such as wind/sun
– Hybrid engines in cars and trucks use much
less gas
– Wind turbines can produce electric power

Protect and Conserve Natural
Resources
• Protect natural resources by following the
three Rs

Reusing Reducing
Products Waste

Recycling
Products

Reusing Products

Ways to Reuse Products

Carry a reusable tote bag when shopping.
Reuse wrapping paper, plastic bags, and boxes.
Give outgrown clothes to others.
Use the back sides of paper for notes.
Cut up old sheets and towels for cleaning rags.
Donate old items to various organizations.
Make art projects out of discarded items.

Reducing Waste

• You can reduce waste by

– precycling, or buying products that reduce
waste
– reading labels to avoid buying hazardous
waste products
– avoiding buying disposable products
– buying refills instead of single packages

Recycling Products

• Recycling – turning a used product into a

product that can be used
• Recycling is one way to dispose of goods
and get the most use from them
– Paper
– Plastic
– Bottles
– Cans continued
– Scrap metal © Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Permission granted to reproduce for educational use only.
Recycling Products

• You can recycle by

– participating in recycling programs
– buying products from companies that use
recycled materials and practice recycling
– buying environmentally friendly products
– contacting companies that generate a lot of
waste to ask about their recycling policies

Energy Efficiency
Objectives
• Define efficiency, solar energy, and
insulation.
• Name sources of energy.
• Give examples of how you can improve
efficiency.

Efficiency

• Efficiency means working in the best

possible manner with the least amount of
waste
• Improving energy efficiency reduces the
amount of energy your family uses

Conserving Heat

• Improve the efficiency of the energy used to

heat your home by
– using solar energy (energy from the sun’s
rays)
– keeping heat turned off until needed
– leaving thermostat settings lower in winter
and wearing layered clothing
– lowering the thermostat 5 to 8 degrees when
continued
away from home
© Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Permission granted to reproduce for educational use only.
Conserving Heat

• To reduce heat loss,

– check furnace filter monthly
– install weather stripping around window and
door frames
– close draperies and windows at night
– make sure your home has enough insulation
– Insulation – material used to prevent the
transfer of heat or cold
continued

Conserving Heat

• To save energy needed to heat water,

– turn the water heater off when away from
home for several days
– do not overheat water; most homes only
need water heated to 120F (49C)
– use hot water only when needed
– take showers instead of baths
– fix dripping faucets
© Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Permission granted to reproduce for educational use only.
Did You Know?

• You can save energy

and conserve heat by
using fans. Since heat
rises, ceiling fans
force the hot air down
from the ceiling.

Using Cooling Systems Wisely

• Window or room air conditioners cool a room

or a small area of a house
• Central air conditioning cools a whole house
or building, but uses a lot of energy
– Set the thermostat at 78F (26C)
– Turn the thermostat up or off when no one is
home
– Maintain the system; change filters often

Using Cooling Systems Wisely

Save Energy When Using Cooling Systems

Close all windows and doors to a cooled space.
Use storm windows.
Pull shades across the windows during the day.
Open windows when cool outside.
Avoid using appliances and lights during the hottest part
of the day.
Schedule meals, showers, laundry, and ironing in the
morning or evening.
Wear lightweight clothing whenever possible.
