STUDY AREA
• Sindhudurg is an administrative district in the state of Maharashtra in India.
• Maharashtra has around 720km of coastline out of which Sindhudurg has 120 km.
WHAT’S OUR CASESTUDY ALL ABOUT?
• 2 impt. points: 1.mangrove conservation
2. livelihood generation

• UNDP project (2012-2017).

• Mangrove cell.

• Mangrove foundation.
UNDP PROJECT(2012-17)
• This project was started by MoEF&CC with GEF(Global Enviroment Facility).

• Highlights of the project:

1. 1lakh mangrove sapling to be planted to rehablitate 20ha of degraded area.

2.Biodiversity Management Committees to be formed.

3.Rehabitation of degraged coral sites through trasplantation.

4.Sindhudurg Clean Beach Campaign.

5. Biodiversity inclusive fisheries plan.

6.Capacity building and awareness generation programme.

Crab Culture
Since mangroves provide healthy breeding grounds for crabs, crab farming activities in mangrove
areas help in conservation of mangrove while generating income for the coastal communities.
