Summary
Overview
• Light Fishing means The use of artificial light in fishing operations to attract
and aggregate fish and eventually capture them using various fishing gears
such as hooks, gill net, purse seine, beach seine, cast net or other means.

• Light fishing involves the use of lights attached to structures above water
or suspended underwater to attract fish to specific areas and facilitate
harvesting.

• It is a form of optical bait used to attract and concentrate fish to a spot.

Purse seine Conditions in Egypt

In the past: Nowadays:

Fishermen used two small boats. Fishermen are using vessel and small
boat.
History of light fishing

1.Fire lit 4.Led Lamps

2.Torch 3.Fuel Oil

Types of light used in fishing
High Density Low Density
 Halogen Lamp
 LED
 metal halide

 pressure mercury  fluorescent lights

It burns juveniles It does not harm juveniles

Lights can be:
 Attached to structures Above water to attract fish such as: Anchovy and
Sardine.
 suspended underwater to attract Squid.

Lights and lamps are placed on:

The bow.
The Stern.

Sources of lights during fishing operation:

• Battery.
• Electric Generator.
• Dynamo.
How Fish and other marine mammals
move in response to light?
• When the artificial light is used ,it attracts very small organisms (Plankton)
which the fish feed on, or the fish may be attracted to larger organisms that
feed on the plankton.
Prosperities of ideal Light Fishing
• Proper intensity.
• Be powered by a portable electrical supply.
• Be submersible.
• Emit its light in a color similar to the fishes space (blue or green).
Is Light Fishing
Passive
or Active
Method?
It is passive method
Impacts of Light Fishing
 Catching of immature stocks
As a study in 2002 showed that most of the species caught were of small size and of
immature gonads.

Gonad maturity stage caught by bagan Rambo ín Indonsia

 High rate of bycatch

Most commonly bycatch species unintentionally caught during fishing with light operations
include marine mammals, turtles, birds and invertebrates leading to wasting of living
resources.
 Overfishing

Total Fishing Effort, Total Production and CPUE in Sinjai Waters

 Green gas emission
The annual carbon-dioxide gas emission from 110,000 pressurized kerosene
lanterns was estimated to be 85,000 Metric tons per year.
Recommendations
 The light purse-seines should use only large mesh sizes (>45 mm) nets to avoid
capturing of target species at their immature stage.

 Using By-catch Reduction Devices such as Turtle Excluding Devices, sorting grids
that allow by-catch to escape.

 The number of days of purse-seine light fishing operations should be restricted to 10

days in a month.

 The power of lights used on board the vessels maybe restricted to 25 kW in order to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Summary
 Light fishing is form of optical bait for attracting marine organisms.

 The using of lights in fishing begins with fire lit till they reached now to the LED lamps.

 The catching principle of light fishing is that when artificial lights turned on from a vessel ,plankton starts
to aggregate in the illuminated area thus small fish aggregate then the bigger ones.

 Purse seine is the most fishing gears using lights during fishing, lights can be above water to attract
pelagic fish or suspended underwater to attract Squid.

 Lights can be operated in high or low intensity but the low intensity ones are preferred.

 Theimpact of light fishing include catching small immature fish, overfishing ,by-catch and green
gas emission.
