 What is ?
~ Visible light is a form
of , as are
radio waves, infrared radiation,
ultraviolet radiation, X-rays and
microwaves. Generally, visible light is
defined as the wavelengths that are visible
to most human eyes.
 What is ?
~ Visible light falls in the range of the EM
spectrum between infrared (IR) and
ultraviolet (UV). It has frequencies of about
4 × 10^14 to 8 × 10^14 cycles per second, or
hertz (Hz) and wavelengths of about 740
nanometers (nm) or 2.9 × 10^-5 inches, to 380
nm (1.5 × 10^-5 inches). Energy (J): 3 × 10^-19
to –5 × 10^-19
 Visible Light in
~ When white light passes through a
prism, it is separated into its constituent
colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, ,
and . These colors do not
distinctly separate but they continuously
change from Red to Violet. Red color has
the longest wavelength among these colors
and violet has the shortest wavelength.
 Visible Light in
Color Wavelength (nm)
Indigo- 390 to 455
Violet
Blue 455 to 492
Green 492 to 577
Yellow 577 to 597
Orange 597 to 622
Red 622 to 700

Ultraviolet Rays

• What is Ultraviolet Rays?
~ Ultraviolet light is a type of
electromagnetic radiation that makes
black-light posters glow, and is responsible
for summer tans — and
sunburns. However, too
much exposure to UV
radiation is damaging to
living tissue.
• What is Ultraviolet Rays?
~ UV ray falls in the range of the EM spectrum
between visible light and X-rays. It has
frequencies of about 8 × 10^14 to 3 ×
10^16 cycles per second, or hertz
(Hz), and wavelengths of about 380
nanometers (1.5 × 10^-5 inches)
to about 10 nm (4 × 10^-7 inches).
Energy (J): 5 × 10^-19 to –2 × 10^-17
• Kinds of Ultraviolet Rays:
~ According to the U.S. Navy's "Ultraviolet
Radiation Guide," UV is generally divided into
three sub-bands. It also state, "Radiations with
wavelengths from 10 nm to 180 nm are
sometimes referred to as vacuum or
extreme UV." These wavelengths are
blocked by air, and they only
propagate in a vacuum.
• Kinds of Ultraviolet Rays:
UV Ray Wavelength (nm)

UVA/Near 315 to 400

UVB/Middle 280 to 315

UVC/Far 180 to 280

• What are the uses of UV Rays?
~ Ultraviolet radiation in UV lamps are used
by banks to check the signature on
passbook. The signature is marked on the
passbook with fluorescent ink. It
becomes visible when viewed
under UV lamp. These lamps are
also used to identify fake
banknotes.
With UV light
• What are the uses of UV Rays?
~ UV radiation is used to sterilized water
from drinking fountains. Some washing
powder contains fluorescent chemicals
which glow in sunlight that
makes your shirt whiter than
white in Daylight.
• What are the uses of UV Rays?
~ UV radiation in sunlight produces vitamin
D in the skin and gives us tanning effect.
Overexposure to UV radiation may lead to
skin cancer. Sunscreen lotion
serves as filters that protect
the body from UV radiation.
