INTRODUCTION
The low achievement scores of Filipino students are reflected to the poor basic education that
the country have. Many students who finished basic education do not possess sufficient mastery of
basic competencies and one of the reasons is that students do not get adequate instructional time
or the time on doing task. Curriculum plays a vital role in the field of education and it is considered
as the heart of the school. Enhancing the quality of basic education in the Philippines is in need.

On the discussion of the Department of Education, it enhance the basic education system of
the country which is in line with the K to 12 curriculum. And also stated through the Philippine
Daily Inquirer (September 22, 2011), that one of the reasons why K -12 flourished in the Philippine
Basic Education was the result of the National Achievement Test (NAT), school year 2010-2011, in
which almost two-thirds (2/3) of the country’s high schools achieved poor result in the NAT score.
K to 12 program was implemented by the government that aims to provide sufficient learning and
develop learners into a better person.
Creating a functional basic education system is the goal of the Enhanced K to 12 Basic
Education Program that will produce a productive and responsible citizen that is equipped with
the essential competencies and also the skills for the life-long learning and employment of the
citizen. Thus, awareness in education is essential to enhances one’s understanding of the world.

The researchers decided to undertake this research to determine the awareness of the
education students in the implementation of the said curriculum. It also determined their level of
understanding and how ready they are to be an educator in the world of teaching.

Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to determine the level of awareness of K to 12 curriculum among education students
in Caraga State University. More specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions;

1. What is the demographic profile of the students in terms of:

1.1 age;
1.2 program; and
1.3 gender?

2. What is the level of awareness of the students towards K to 12 curriculum in terms of:

2.1 teaching strategies in K+12 curriculum;

2.2 students competencies in K+12 curriculum; and
2.3 K+12 curriculum?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the demographic profile of the respondents and their
level of awareness of K to 12 curriculum?
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS
This study utilized the descriptive method of research in order to achieve the purpose of this
study. This study was conducted at the College of Education in Caraga State University. It is located at
Ampayon, Butuan City.
The simple random sampling and the Sloven’s formula was used in this study to obtain the list of
respondents from the fourth year of Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics and
Biology. Hence, a total of 196 were selected; 79 from BSED Mathematics and 117 from BSED Biology.
The researchers used a self-structured survey questionnaire as the major source in gathering the
primary data.
This study used the frequency count and percentages to determine the demographic profile of the
respondents. The weighted mean were used to determine the level of awareness of the respondents.
The Chi-square test for association were used to measure the significant association between the
demographic profile and the level of awareness of K-12 curriculum.

Findings
Based on the findings of the study, it revealed that among the education students; specifically the
fourth year BSEd Mathematics and Biology in terms of perception and understanding on certain issues of
K to 12 curriculum they were mindful when it comes to the teaching strategies, students’ competencies
and about the rationale of K to 12 curriculum. It implies that the respondents had an appreciation in
education, especially in the new implemented curriculum.

The study found out that the respondents were highly aware on the teaching strategies of the teachers
in the K to 12 curriculum obtained a total weighted mean of 3.4309. It signifies that the fourth year BSEd
Mathematics and Biology students find the teaching strategies of the teachers in the K to 12 curriculum
effective and also in the utilization of the approaches which was designed to mobilize the teaching-
learning process for the attainment of the goals of the new curriculum.

On the other hand, the level of awareness on the students’ competencies in the K to 12 curriculum
was assessed by the respondents to a highly aware, as sustained by the overall weighted mean of 3.3582.
In terms of the rationale of the K to 12 curriculum was likewise measured to a highly aware, as confirmed
by the overall weighted mean of 3.4603.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn. The study revealed that
majority of the respondents’ or 173 students falls under the age bracket from 19 to 21. It also revealed
that most of the respondents were females. The level of awareness of the fourth year education
students in terms of teaching strategies and the rationale of K to 12 curriculum has no significant
relationship with their age, gender and program. On the other hand, their level of awareness in terms
of students’ competencies has no significant relationship their gender and program. However, their
level of awareness in terms of students’ competencies has a significant relationship with their age.

The fourth year education students; specifically the BSEd Mathematics and Biology students of
Caraga State University were highly aware about the implementation of the new curriculum and its
rationale. Also, they were updated about the teachers teaching strategies and what does the learners
do, in this newly implemented curriculum.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the findings and the conclusion presented, the following recommendations are suggested:

1. Education students should always be open-minded and flexible to accept every changes in the newly

implemented curriculum for them to do a better task in the field.

2. Instructors should also maintain and strengthen further readiness and awareness in the newly implemented

curriculum through attending more in-service training and seminars related to K to 12. They should also be

more resourceful and creative by keeping themselves abreast of the current educational trends.

3. The schools should maintain and even bring to a higher level their readiness in the implementation of K to

12 through adopting more innovative trends, improving their facilities and preparing themselves for

globalization through utilization of multimedia.

4. Future researchers should be undertaken utilizing the same instruments and methodologies but in different
setting and bigger samples.
