• Bandwidth control using rate limiting
• Act as an edge router for terminating VPN
traffic.
• Protocols: OSPF, BGP, MP-BGP and LDP
• Supports Lawful interception and monitoring
BRAS Architecture
• Deployed at the edge of the NIB-II
network
• Installed in all the A sites (except
Mumbai). Total 23
• Capacity of 8 Gbps (in A1 sites) and 4
Gbps (in other A sites)
• Can handle 480000 concurrent sessions
(A1 sites)

Broadband Multiplay – A3 & A4

Broadband Multiplay – B1 &
(B2+BNG) Cities
Broadband Multiplay – (B2-
BNG) Cities
BNG is of Redback make. Some Features
are…

•Every card is self supporting

•Every card makes logical routing & switching
decisions
•Pay as you grow model
•Redundant power supply for every slot
•Redundant dual route processor
•Hot Swap for every card
• Simple and stable physical topology and logical
topology
• Compared with traditional mesh topology, the RPR ring
based topology greatly simplifies the physical topology,
substantially reduce the fiber connections and router ports.
• From logical point of view, all nodes on a RPR ring are
directly connected, thus reduces the routing table amount.
In case of a link failure or a node failure, there is no need to
re-calculate the routing path which has significant meaning
to a large scale IP backbone.
• High quality services at low cost
Feature of RPR
Scalability - upto 200 nodes in single ring
Topology discovery – easy to add or delete node
Rapid protection – in case fibre cut etc..
Fairness Algorithm - Let us see the next slide
• 10G bandwidth is needed for broadband services
• More and more users are using internet services
• Bandwidth consuming services are emerging (eg.
multi-media interactive applications)
• Simple ring topology needs more bandwidth
• Ring bandwidth is shared among all nodes, thus larger
bandwidth is required
• The price of 10G port is affordable nowadays
MCR, BNG & RPR Tier-I for
Chennai
• There are 8 BNGs and 8 RPR Tier-I
switches allotted for Chennai
• 4 BNG and 4 RPR Tier-I are installed at
Haddows Road
• The other 4 BNG and 4 RPR Tier-I are
installed at K.K.Nagar
• MCR-1 installed at Haddows Road, MCR-2
installed at K.K.Nagar.

RPOP Components
As Chennai is the RPOP for South, the
following servers are being installed
1. AAA
2. SSSC, SSSS
3. ACS
4. eMS for CPEs and DSLAMs
5. Policy Servers (Netsweeper is an interesting
component here)
•Netsweeper will be implemented in Multiplay
Project

•Policy servers & Gateway Filters are being

installed at RPOP

What Netsweeper Does ?

Categorizes Internet requests using a variety of

methods

 Uses the assigned categorization to decide

support
Customer Confidence
• Speed
• Billing
• Provisioning efficiency
• Ensuring fault free service
Speed Low ? Reasons
• ADSL equipment
• Machine (PC) memory / OS
• Many simultaneous users (more than one machine
using the same broadband connection)
• Remote site speed ( the speed at which the site
you are visiting could dispense pages for you)
• Network congestion
• Other applications running on your local machine
• Virus attack & cookies in your machine
Billing
• Project-3 is taking care of the Billing.
However it will be feeding to the local
billing software as done in existing 2.2. The
local billing software is being amended as
per mulitiplay requirements.
While Provisioning efficiency might
improve and customer complaints might
come down because of the SAM, SSM and
CSM along with Project-3 software and
SSSS from which the customer himself can
order a new service like BOD, VOD etc..
there are certain major challenges ahead to
be addressed.
Challenges
• Services like IP-TV will really require our
employees, our partners are to be fully willing to
work on 24 x 7 basis
• Plans for Volume based, Time based as well as
unlimited volume are to be introduced with
attraction to draw customers to our side
• Now as a number of Tier-2s are connected in a
Ring, fibre quality should be good as it is going to
of 10Gbps ring. But many fibres used for the rings
lack quality now itself which may further
deteriorate.
Challenges (Contd…)
• Our Level 2 help line and our external units
should work in tandem. Though the external unit
man willing to work beyond his duty hours, there
is no help rendered to him from the help line and
vice-versa.
• Only Broadband Internet and VPN is offered now
in Multiplay. But very soon, the other services
must be launched otherwise the delay will enable
the private providers to take away the customers
