 I will be discussing how Military Actions have had a economic

Impact as well as a impact on the workforce as a whole. The Topics
I will be covering are Atomic Bombs, The Cold War, and Pearl
Harbor. They all have Military involvement and with having that they
had both positive and negative impacts on society and the
economy.
Atomic Bombs 4
The Atomic Bomb was originally known as The Manhattan
Project. It was the United States effort to create a functional
Atomic Bomb. The first successful test was on July 16, 1945
near Alamogordo, New Mexico. This was also known as the
Trinity Test. The Manhattan Project was a secret military
project that was created in 1942. It was to design the first
United States Nuclear Weapon. Originally created in fear
that Germany would produce a nuclear weapon during
WWII. The Project originated in Manhattan, New York and
that is how it got the name The Manhattan Project. This new
found research created jobs for the materials that were used
to make the bombs as well as the production of the bombs.
The economic impact of a detonation of a atomic bomb
would be as follows”1. New price ratios-2. New mix of
consumer and producer goods-3.New import-export
balance-4 A pattern of recovery wich depends on the
elasticity of substitution(label for capital), the
competitiveness of producers in other regions, and the
amount of external aid flowing to the victims-5. New
government budget deficit”( Cochrane,PH.D., H., &
Mileti,PH.D., D. (1986). These would take place anywhere a
Atomic Bomb would be dropped including in Japan where
the United States dropped 2 atomic bombs that essentially
forced Japan to surrender during WWII.

Cold War 5
The Cold war was fought both on a Military front as well
as a non military front. The Non Military action was largely
economical in nature. To start though the Military aspect was
a large build up of defensive and retaliatory military forces.
This combined with Military alliances as well as political
alliances would extend the United States protection beyond
the borders of the country by having other country’s support
the United States as well as engaging in combat. The non
military options that are economical include “building an
international economic system conducive to economic
prosperity; engaging in persuasion, providing incentives, and
occasionally imposing economic sanctions; and, not least,
promoting a robust US economy” (Cooper, Richard N. 2008)
To this day the government still enacts sanctions against other
country’s to deter major conflicts from arising. Historically
these options have been known to prevent wars but also
have caused a few wars to start. Whether they were minor
incursions, strategic strikes, political sanctions, or all out boots
on the ground combat. The United States attempts to resolve
issues without having to resort to military measures. The United
States likes to reserve Military action as a last resort and will
exhaust all other options first. The United States will even resort
to having N.A.T.O get involved if it has to in order to help
(https://oss.adm.ntu.edu.sg/lzhang041/tag/ha resolve disputes with other countries. The Soviet Union mainly
tred/.) started the Cold War cause it was not receiving aid from the
allied countries after WWII to help rebuild the infostructure.
Pearl Harbor 6
The attack on Pearl Harbor was a horrific one. Hawaii
was not yet a state at the time of the attack.”The U.S.
declared war on Japan the day after Pearl Harbor was
attacked. Hawaii immediately came under martial law, and
even more military members came to the island. The war
interrupted regular commercial shipping, and all government
operations were turned over to the military.Labor union
activity was suspended, which was a setback for the sugar
and pineapple plantation workers. Under martial law, wages
were frozen.” (n.a. https://visitpearlharbor.org/the-hawaiian-
economy-after-pearl-harbor/) The attack had a large
economical impact on Hawaii as normal jobs were
interrupted and essentially everything became Military. A lot
of people were put out of work or had to find government
jobs to be able to sustain themselves. The unions in Hawaii
basically ceased to exist during the time of the war cause of
the fact they were not able to negotiate wages with the
wage freeze that was in place as stated in the text cited
from the Pearl Harbor visitor website. Also the Unions had to
stop operating due to the Military taking over everything in
Hawaii at the time. The economy managed to survive
through the government due to ship building as well as ship
repairs during WWII. It also survived with the local people
helping to ensure the military had the necessary support that
they needed. The military utilized the crops from the sugar
and pineapple farms to help feed the troops. I the author
know this from speaking with my Grandfather who served in
WWII at the close of the War with Japan. (https://www.britannica.com/event/Pearl-Harbor-
attack.)
