Chapter 0
Foreword
Equipment configuration
This manual is intended for the maintenance team having followed a training course
approved by THALES.
It presents the procedures required to maintain the equipment in operational state and
also serves as reference for its use and the good understanding of its operation.
The whole description of the technical manual is limited at the required level of
maintenance.
Organisation
Chapter 0, "Foreword", gives an outline of this manual with the list of abbreviations, table
of contents and list of figures.
Symbols in text
These symbols may be found in the text of this manual. They have the following mea-
nings.
This warning symbol means danger. The maintenance technician is in a situation that
could cause bodily injury. Before maintenance team work on any equipment, techni-

cian must be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry, radio frequency,
rotating equipment and high elevation work. It is necessary to be familiar with the pro-
cedures usually used to avoid the accidents and to consult safety instructions added
to this manual.
Text set off in this manner indicates that failure to follow directions could result in
damage to equipment or loss information.
Caution
Text set off in this manner presents commentary, sidelights, or interesting points of
information.

Chapter 1
General description
Introduction
The TOM cabinet (see Figure 1−1) is a standard 19" cabinet, which encloses two
redundant radar processing channels and associated maintenance equipment. This
grouping arrangement offers great modularity capability as the same hardware assem-
bly can be installed directly in primary, secondary and co−mounted radar systems.

Internal equipment
T he TOM cabinet physically interfaces with the following units from top to bottom:
• the channel 1 (A) equipment which consists of:
•
• one NTP Server (option),
• one TOP PC (also named DPC PC),
• one or two (option) ATCC LINES,
the maintenance and communication equipment:
•
• one video switching box,
• one IRIS PC,
• one IRIS LINES (option),
• the optional modems,
• one RCMS PC,
the channel 2 (B) equipment which consists of:
•
• one NTP Server (option),
• one TOP PC (also named DPC PC),
one or two (option) ATCC LINES.
The LAN switches, located at the back of the cabinet, are connected to the relevant
equipment of channel 1, channel 2 and supervision LAN.
The azimuth encoder power supplies are located at the rear left part of the cabinet.
A terminal block interfaces the internal units with AC mains via four independent mains
socket strips (channel 1, channel 2, maintenance).
These four strips are distributed along the rear face of the cabinet.
External equipment
The TOM embedded units are connected to the following external equipment (see
F igure 1−2):
• Each TOP−PC (DPC−PC) is interfaced with the TMR−PC via the switch ofthe
• relevant channel Ethernet LAN.
• Each external TMR−PC is connected to the supervision switch.
Plot and track messages are delivered to the ATCC via the LINES communica-
• tion equipment and optional modems.
The RCMS LTM is connected to the I/O modules equipment (part of RCMS) via
• the supervision LAN switch.
The RCMS LTM is also connected to the remote STM; this link is customisation
• sensitive too.
The external Power Distribution cabinet delivers the AC mains to units embedded

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Physical description
The 19" standard units installed in the TOM cabinet are slid on fixed lateral rails and atta-
ched to the frame of the cabinet by their front faces. Their front panels are directly acces-
sible; their rear faces are accessible after opening the cabinet backdoor.
Non 19" standard units are installed in the rear part of the TOM cabinet: two sets of two
power supplies powering the azimuth encoders are clipped on two DIN Rails and three
LAN switches are placed on shelves. Labels posted on the cabinet near the LAN swit-
ches refer to the LAN connected to each switch.
Main cooling airflow circulates from front to rear, through the internal fans of the housed
units.
Electrical connection
The TOM cabinet is designed to be installed on a skid which facilitates the interconnec-
tion of side by side cabinets. All external interconnection of the TOM cabinet are perfor-
med through its floor except for the encoders cables. A mains terminal block is located
on the floor of the TOM cabinet. It is accessible when the rear door is open.
The cabinet is equipped with several mains sockets for powering separately the diffe-
rent channel units with mains: switching off one complete channel, or the service units,
has no influence on other units.
This operation is performed using the switch of the Power Distribution cabinet.
Description
The encoder DC supply units (see Figure 1−3) are clipped on two rails visible from the
rear side.
One is in the upper part of the TOM cabinet, in the area allocated to radar channel 1.
The second one is in the lower part of the TOM cabinet, in the area allocated to radar
channel 2.
E ach one of these two rails receives two single output voltage units:
•• One delivers a 5V DC voltage to the encoder of the relevant channel.
The other delivers a 15V DC voltage to the same encoder.
The general shape of the DC supply units is roughly cubic. Its front face receives the
technical label with the DC supply unit reference and the connection description related
to the upper side terminal pins. The right one is assigned to the output voltage adjust-
ment. A LED indicator for power on is located beside the adjustment pin.
The rear face is equipped with an attaching device suitable for clipping it on the cabinet
DIN rail.
The electrical cables are connected to the encoders via the opening of the cabinet roof.

to the general table of contents established for the programme in the System Manual.
Their reference and quantity are specific for each individual radar site and are given in
the System Manual.
Chapter 2
Functional description
The functions of the cabinet itself are limited to the mechanical and electrical interface.
The functional description of the cabinet internal equipment is depicted in the relevant
technical manual.
The reader is kindly requested to refer to the general table of contents available at the
beginning of each volume. This table lists all the technical literature related to the spe-
Note
cific programme.
On html format technical documentation on the left of the screen there is a hierarchy
menu which is used for navigating in the manuals.
The encoder power supplies deliver adjustable voltages which take into account the
loss due to the cable length.
This adjustment has to be carried out once at site installation or after device replace-
ment.
The PSUs are equipped with an input EMI filter, the input voltage is then rectified and
filtered before conversion to low voltage by a power switch and a transformer.
The output voltage is finally rectified and filtered for becoming a DC voltage. The discre-
pancy of this output voltage is detected and a feed back circuitry controls the power
switch so as to obtain the specified characteristics.

The TOM cabinet could be in operation (switched on) or switched off (un−powered).
Switching−on
The units housed in the TOM Cabinet are switched−on by pushing the relevant "ON"
button on the Power Distribution cabinet front panel.
Displays
For encoder power supply units, LEDs on their front panel indicate the status of each
unit:
Led color Status of output voltage
Red output voltage out of tolerances
Green output voltage correct
Switching−off
The units housed in the TOM Cabinet are switched−off by pushing the relevant "OFF"
button on the Power Distribution cabinet front panel.
