Chapter 1

Off to Cloncurry
The announcement went off for the third time.
‘Ding-dong! The flight CR5O2 is due in two
minutes’ time. I groaned inwardly. How many
times were they going to say this before I lost my
head? It was frustating sitting there listening to a
great big heap of lies and not knowing what the
real truth was.
At last, the bell sounded for all the passengers
to board the plane. I sighed with relief. Well, the
plane had certainly took a long time to reach
here! I picked up my bag, walked through the
tunnels and directly boarded the CR502.
Cont. chapter 1
The woman and her child weaved their
way in through the busy streets of
Cloncurry. Once the coast was clear, they
made their way straight for the airport.
“Quick, quick!” urged the girl excitedly.
We’ll meet my uncle and aunt for the first
time!”
But when she came to the arrival
section, all that attracted her attention
was the faint greenish glow that had
started to come from my bag.
Chapter 2
Trekker’s Hotel

The flight had been a long

uncomfortable journey. Even though I
personally liked aeroplane rides, I couldn’t
help disliking this one. The seat handles
couldn’t be moved, there was no sunshade
on the windows, there was no mini TV, and
there was no cushion to keep you warm
and snugly. In fact, the whole of it had
seemed like a ghastly nightmare.
I’d booked to stay at an inn called
Trekker’s Inn. In fact, it looked more like a
hotel to me, since there was no restaurant
(you had to buy your own food from
somewhere else).
Chapter 3
An odd happening in the night
Just as I stepped inside, I knew at once that there
was something wrong with this place. There
were a few rickety chairs, a couple of old wooden
tables, and lots of signs, posters etc. The floor
was made out of hardened clay instead of solid
wood.
What on earth was this? Surely….Surely this
did’nt mean that the house was haunted? Then
suddenly two signs in the corner of a huge
archway fell into sight, which increased my
feeling of intense horror. One said, ‘Stairs to the
catacombs.’ The other said, ‘This was the home
of an ancient god. Please be careful. ’ Was I
mad? I’d come into a place that had catacombs!
Anything could come out at night! And why on
CONTD.Chapter 3
I couldn’t make a head or tail of this stuff.
Still, bothering to waste no time, I stepped
into the queue. When I came to the counter, the
hotel manager gave me toothed grin. His eyes
were filled with tiredness, his hair was VERY
ruffled, his left ear was missing, he was nearly
toothless and his fingernails had grown to twice
their normal size. He looked just like a wild
animal who had come from the forest. “Vat can
I co for yoo, fir?” he asked kindly. “Hello,” I
recited hurriedly. “I have ordered for a stay at
room 57 for 1 week.I would like to go to my
room now.” “Yoo can lo,” muttered the man,
CONTD.Chapter 3
I sighed to myself, and walked off through the
long winding corridors. Well, I had come here to
find out about Oceania. So far, it didn’t seem a
nice place at all!
At last, I came to the room. It’s door was made
out of solid bricks. There was a brass doorknob
in the form of a twisted dragon. And even worse,
there was a metal grille located in the left side of
the floor. It had four words carved onto the silver:
SHORTCUT TO THE
CATACOMBS
I moaned, anger rising inside me every
moment. Was
CONTD. Chapter 3
it going to stop at some point? I really didn’t know.
But there was a very good reason why the hotel
people
put signs everywhere….
I started to write about Oceania, my pen
scribbling on
tirelessly. After an hour of writing or so, I jumped
into bed,
and started to read my book.
Only then did I turn my attention towards
something very
strange- balls of green light were coming out of my
bag.
They all clustered together at the middle of the

golden face. It spoke in a hard, stony voice. “I trust
you to
find the marble,” it roared. Just then the door broke
open
And seven people flooded in. The face vanished,
and
questions rained down upon me.
“It’s a cock-and-bull story,” leered Joe, the
assistant
manager scornfully. “We don’t even believe in
these things
One tiny little bit!” “It’s definitely Vantral back at

The Legend of Oriana
“You’ve been here only for bone day, I think that
is?”
asked John. I nodded. “Well, you’ve certainly seen
lot in a
Little time,” he sighed, fondling his motorbike.
“Perhaps, I
Should tell you something now.”
“You know that golden face? Well, I’ll explain what
it is. It

are in

so nobody had any complaints. But, one day,
everything
went wrong- everything started to slide down into
the
depths of misery.
“The king had two sons called Golcurry and
Vantral. Gol-
curry was like Oriana. But, Vantral always plotted
against
the king, whatever the situation. This was because
Oriana
had something he badly wanted. It was a code. Not
CONTD. Chapter 4
“He requested you to bring him the marble last
night.” I
gasped. “Oh, and I forgot something. Golcurry died
in an
accident.”
I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing. But I
suppose
time flies, doesn’t it? So I just memorized all the
facts, and
went inside the hotel again.
Chapter 5
A visit to the quarry- and an odd
discovery
Me and John went to an old farmhouse to collect
our
Lunch. The place seemed completely different at
daytime.
Black trucks swept through the roads, the buildings
gleamed in the sunlight, and the area was
completely
clean. It seemed better than England itself.
Just as we opened the gate, a burly man came
running
out with a filled food tray in his hands. “Come here
for
food? Well all you get i-is chicken, brrread and mi-
mi-milk,”
CONTD. Chapter 5
Oriana? I’m Mr. Peters…,” he broke off.
“What’s Oriana got to do with you?” I asked
suddenly,
snatching the food. It was quite insulting. “Nothing,
just
nothing.” replied Mr. Peters airily. I’ve heard of the
legend
that’s all!”
“Well, get on with your OWN business then!” I
snapped,
leaving a wild-eyed Mr. Peters to grumble and
grunt.
CONTD. Chapter5
Oriana?” John nodded. “Well, he could be in league
with
Vantral then!” “Hmm. I see, I see…” said John
thoughtfully.
The following noon, after lunch, we decided to
visit the
old quarry at the side gate of Trekker’s hotel. The
place
looked forlorn, with all the stone weapons.
CONTD. Chapter 5
We took out our spades and started digging. At one point,
We fad formed a 2feet long, feet deep pit. All kinds of
Ancient weapons lay on the ground! But something
attracted our attention more than anything else in the world.
It was a piece of brown papyrus, which said:
12th October,1989 Mr. Peters
Olly farm 86,Trekker’s Road,

Dear Jack,
After days of searching, we have finally managed to
find the marble in the
heart of a rainforest. It was hid by Oriana in the
bark of a tree. Since you
CONTD. Chapter 5
are the only descendant of Vantral left, please come
and see the code! The
meeting is taking place at the Kult, at 2:25pm.We
also have some of the most
advanced tools in the world, to help you with your
experiment!Hope you are
successful with your project.
Yours sincerely,
Acuta
The Chief Mayan
We stood there, gaping open-mouthed at the letter. OK,
so there were a few facts to be made out of this: Mr. Peter
was the only descendant of Vantral alive; he was friend
CONTD. Chapter 5
with some Mayans; they had found the marble for
him; he
was going to do some project with it. It was all most
myst-
erious.
CONTD. Chapter 5
Just as I put the letter into my bag, Mr. Peters burst
through the door. He looked suspicious. “Get out!” he
growled,. “Fine! But you won’t get what you need this time,
Petesy!” I called out.
When we had got out, a brainwave suddenly came into
my mind.” “Why don’t we search the Yellow Pages for a
place called the Kult?” I asked. “Brilliant idea!” exclaimed
John.
Later on that evening, after supper, we went to the local
post office and checked the Yellow Pages. The K section
was not very big. I recited all the names. “Krakken, Kroll,
CONTD. Chapter 5
Kroll, Kud, Kuhor, Kuis, Kukk, Kuld, KULT!!” “What is
it?”
asked John excitedly. “Kult: a large pit in the middle
of
Cucks Wood, home to some ancient civilizations.”
“My idea
works!” cried John. “One of us could dress up and
pretend
to be Mr. Peters, see the code, and run away!”
“Brilliant!” I
yelled.
Chapter 6
The Firenze
“Your bike, a camp, our bags and old Petesy’s disguise.
That’s about all we should need.” I went through the list
about preparations for the trip.John sighed. “ I didn’t know
you called him Petesy.” “Well, that’s his new nickname
then!” I grinned.
Once we were outside, I didn’t know where to go.
“There’s only one way into Cuck’s Woods,” explained
John, “and that is to go to an old house on the far left. It
has a long underground tunnel that leads to just after the
beginning point.”
“Lots of years ago, they bricked up the entrance with
CONTD. Chapter 6
with a high fence. Then the owners of this weirdo
house
dug a tunnel to the woods, which was through the
Catacombs. It had entrances which led up to our
hotel.”
I shivered, and looked at my watch, 10:30 a.m.. We
still
had 6 hours to get going.
When we at last came to the house, I looked up
at it in
awe. It had silver gate, which was followed by shiny
black
doors inside. The building had 12 floors and a

John asked me in the back, and together we

stepped
through a couple of grilles. Then we started to work
our
way through the doors.
At last, we found what we were looking for. It was
a
brass lid set onto the ground, which said:
CATACOMBS
CONTD. Chapter 6
John pulled the lid out with difficulty. It fell on the stone floor
with a THUNK! We climbed down into the damp, chilly
catacombs that awaited us below.
As soon as we got down, I put on the false toy hat and
suit, which made me look like Mr. Peters. Underneath, I still
had My tracksuit on, but, now it was less noticeable. To
make double-sure, I’d also scented myself, and put on a
voice changer.
Just as we turned, a loud, menacing howl came from the
CONTD. Chapter 6
left. The candlelight flickered, but, it still illuminated
some
part of the scene. All it showed was that something
was
lurking in the shadows nearby. Suddenly, a gigantic
creature came lunging forward, to meet us. Its eyes
were
irregular-shaped, its mouth (or hole) had 2
fearsome
Spikes on either side, its feet had large metal
hoops, and
there was a short tail at the back.
“I’m the Firenze!” it thundered. “And you two
CONTD. Chapter 6
fate tomorrow! Nice little poem, eh? But I do mean
it. You’ll be fried for my
breakfast tomorrow.
“Now you two, buzz off!” Within those words, he
dropped
us both down into a dark, deep pit. In the distance,
we
could hear his rhythmic singing:
“Await your fate
Await your fate,
Await your fate tomorrow!
“Await your fate,
Await your fate,
CONTD. Chapter 6
Await your fate,
Don’t mention the date!”
“He’s a nice little compose indeed,” I muttered. “Now he’ll
tease our head off with that silly song.”
A miracle occurred next day, Or, rather, two miracles,
if I was supposed to be specific.
Me and John decided to play high jump. Our target was
to try and make our hands touch the ceiling. The pit (or
cellar) was not very tall, so we would easily be able to do
that.
CONTD. Chapter 6
On our first try, quite a surprise came. When I
tried to
CONTD. Chapter 6
Jump, I found that the cellar roof was too short for me to
jump under. So, I just stood on my feet. To my surprise,
the part of the roof that I touched was made out of pure
nickel, not the stone that I was expecting!
“John, hey John!” I whispered. “I think I’ve found a way of
escape!” “WHAT?” he squealed. His eyeballs popped to
twice their normal size, and he nearly fainted with surprise.
“Yes, I think I’ve found it. So, let’s try it out!”
We started to push the nickel with all our might.
In a matter of seconds, the hole that I expected had
formed, and the brass lid (oh, sorry, it was actually a brass)
CONTD. Chapter 6
Was lying on the floor. We both climbed up into the
warm
air and sunshine of Cuck’s Wood.
Chapter 7
The ceremony-and capture!
“Well?” demanded John. “What do you think we should
now?” “Go to the ceremony!” I replied. “It’s already 1:30
p.m.! Get a move on!”
The Kult was not situated anywhere nearby. In fact, it
took us almost 2 hrs.10 mins. To find it! When we at last did
find it, I knew at once that there was something
Extraordinary about it. Ancient pictures were carved onto
the wall, and a stove was in the middle of the floor, camps
were all set out all over the place, while tottering piles of
Equipment lay here and there.
CONTD. Chapter 7
John parked his bike, and we decide to have a meal.
After eating our food, at approximately 4:27 p.m.,
I took
a deep breath and jumped down into the Kult.
CONTD. Chapter7
“Hello, Jack!” greeted Acuta cheerfully, coming out of his
tent. “Come on, let’s show you the marble! I realize that you
are very eager to see it.” What he didn’t realize that it was
me under the disguise, not Jack Peters.
At that moment, Mr. Peters jumped into the Kult. “Hello,
guys!” he panted. “Sorry I’m late!” Within a split of second
his stare had turned on me.
Acuta was totally confused. “W-wait a m-m-minute,” he
stammered. “Jack has told me all about you! You dare
disrespect him!
“Grab him, soldiers! And there is one more question for
CONTD. Chapter 7
YOU. Where is your little friend? Ugly little traitor!”
“U-up there,” I stammered, pointing a rather
feeble finger
above. “Luis! Get him,” called Acuta, and a man
immed-
iately scuttled off upwards.
Before I knew it, I was thrown into a cellar, and
the grilles
clanged shut. Moments later, John had been
treated the
same way.
Chapter 8
Where on earth is the marble?

We had to just sit there and let the ceremony pass in front
of our very eyes. John’s voice, as it appeared, wasn’t as
furious as I expected it would be, but rather calm and
relaxed: “I know you had no choice. But we have another
Chance. “What?” I yelped. “Yes,” answered John soothing-
ly. “I watched the ceremony. And guess what! ACUTA HAS
LOST THE MARBLE! So we could actually search the
place that surrounds the cellars for it!”
“Hurray!” I cried. We danced and danced, until it was
time to sleep.
CONTD. Chapter 8

Early next morning, we decided to search for the marble.

First, we tried a large hole in the ceiling. It only led us up
to the surface, and that would do us no good.
Then we tried a steel lid on the floor. It had surprising
results. Its large tunnel (carved out of rock) led down and
down, until we were finally underground. There, we
managed to find a cellar for storing goods.
But there was something of immense value there: THE
MARBLE!
John picked it up at once, and put it in his bag. We
hadn’t even guessed it would be here!
CONTD. Chapter 8
We climbed up the tunnel, and sat down in the
cellar
again. John looked out of the grilles. Apparently,
nobody
had even noticed that just a second ago, there had
been no
trace of us left!
Suddenly, an idea started to form in my mind. “J-
John,” I
whispered nervously, hardly able to believe my
brain. “I
think I know how to break out….” I broke off.
Chapter 9
Breaking Out
“What?” yelled John. “I must say, you’re an absolute
genius. Once you tell us how to fall out of the Firenz’s
Clutches, another time you tell us how to break out of here.
Really,I should give you the ACG!” “What’s that?” I grunted.
“Award for Complete Genius,” grinned John.
“OK, fine. But listen now,” I explained. “At night, when
the Mayans are asleep, we could sneak out through the
hole that leads up to the surface. And if the nightguard(if
there is one) warns the people that we are breaking out,
we’ll escape on your motorbike!” ‘Good, boss!” laughed
John, slapping me on the back.
CONTD. Chapter 9
As soon as we could hear everyone’s rhythmic
‘Ghhrr
Ghrr’ snoring, we set off up the tunnel. It wasn’t a
very
long one, just 2 metres tall.
CONTD. Chapter 9
As soon as we had got up, John went round the
other
side of the Kult to check if there was any night-
guard. He
came back with a disappointed look on his face.
“There is
one, which doubles the danger we actually want,”
he
reported. “Come on then!” Suddenly, a voice spoke
from
the Kult. “Hey, Acuta!” it called. “Traitors are
eswcaping!”
Chapter 10
A race through time
“Quick, quick!” hissed John. “Get onto the bike!” He
jumped onto the driver’s seat, and I leaped in in the back.
The engine started, and we were off!
About 1 km away, we heard the clip-clapping of hooves,
and fifty arrows soared through the air. Luckily, they did not
achieve their target, but they could have killed any one of
us! This was the sign that the Mayans were coming!
“Faster!” I urged. “Fine!” yelled John, and he plunged the
bike into full speed. It was now travelling at 100 km per
hour.
CONTD. Chapter 10
But at one point, we had to stop, for there stood
the
enormous black fence that John had spoke about.
We
were trapped! The Mayans had come into view, and
Acuta
Yelled out, “Game’s up!”
What John did then, would stay with me for the
rest of my
life. He lifted the front wheel of the bike off the
ground, then
the back wheel too. That done, he did a cart-wheel
in mid-

Arrows shot through the air again, but this time

they hit
the solid back rear of John’s bike, and bounced back
to kill

I sighed with relief, and John slowed the bike
down.
Chapter 11
Everything alright
As soon as we entered the hotel, John’s wife flung
herself on him. ”I didn’t know where you were,” she
asked,
her eyes falling on me. “Of course!” I replied. “I
forgot
something,” remembered John, pulling the marble
out of
his bag. “Oh, wow,” I breathed.
