WHAT IS

FREE FALL?
•It is a downward movement under
the force of gravity.
•It is any motion of a body or an
object where gravity is the only
force acting upon it.
It was believed before that in
FREE FALL, heavy bodies fall
at a faster rate than light
objects.
But it was wrong, the reason
why heavy bodies reach the
ground faster than the light
bodies is because of “AIR
RESISTANCE”.
Popular account was said of GALILEO
dropping a small iron ball and a large
cannon ball from the leaning tower of
Pisa where the two balls hit the ground
ALMOST THE SAME time.
 A SKY DIVER WHO DIVES FROM ABOVE
BEFORE HE OPENS HIS PARACHUTE.
AN APPLE FALLING FROM A TREE.
A LEAF FALLING FROM A TREE.
 A PIECE OF PAPER AND A ROCK RELEASE
FROM THE SAME HEIGHT AT THE SAME
TIME.
WHAT IS
ACELERATION DUE
TO GRAVITY?
• It is the acceleration of a body/an object due to
the influence of the PULL OF GRAVITY ALONE,
usually denoted by “g”. And g= 9.8m/s², which
was its standard value but it was most taken as
10m/s².
• It is when a body/an object falls freely under the
influenced of gravity with UNIFORM acceleration.
Acceleration due to gravity is
a VECTOR, which means it
has both a magnitude and a
direction.
•A ball which was being released
from above reach the ground.
•A feather and a bowling ball
being released from above in a
vacuum reach the ground at the
same time with the same speed.
