Turn to Romans 9 The context starts in Romans 8:31 Paul is addressing those who are the elect of God

Key verse to understand: Romans 9:6

In our men¶s Bible study for the next 3 weeks: Week #3 - ³foreknowledge´ (define, support and explain) Week #4 - Romans 9 - part 1 Week #5 - Romans 9 - part 2

Retreat 2011 - Dr. Bruce Ware - ³Friendly Fire´ Reasons for the Retreat Isaiah 26:8 #1 - In order that God¶s name might be praised, worshipped and glorified. Matthew 24 #2 - Dr. Ware wants to be a blow torch set to the kindling of your pursuit to be satisfied in God. Because God is most glorified in you when you are most satisfied in Him.

Matthew 24:12 - ³the end of the age´
Lawlessness will be multiplied Love of many will grow cold

Dr. Ware and I hate the thought of people drying up or freezing up in regard to the gospel. And yet Jesus says ³it is coming´ We are going to see an ice glacier move across the entire world. Amos 8:11-12 So at the end of the age we can expect lawlessness to increase and the love of many to grow cold Now this sounds a bit depressing and pessimistic but keep reading Matthew 24:13-14

Do you feel the tension between verse 12 and verses 13-14? Because those that are frozen and cold are not going to be spreading a passion for the supremacy of King Jesus! Matthew 24:9 When they talk about King Jesus they will be:
Handed over to the authorities to be persecuted Killed or live under the threat of death Hated by all the nations

It is not those who are cold toward the gospel that will be delivering that message but those who are white hot for Christ! So at the end of the age get ready because there will be those who grow cold and those who grow hot.

Again the goal of our retreat weekend is that God will so use Dr. Ware that as he brings to us the truth from God¶s word it would act like a flame thrower on the ice caps of our heart. And one final but critical point. Do you know what the first thing Jesus answered to His disciples when they asked Him about the sign regarding His second coming? Matthew 24:10 We are calling this retreat ³Friendly Fire´ because of 5 essential doctrines of the faith being undermined in the evangelical church by false teaching.

Essentials under attack in the evangelical church 1. Assaults on the authority of Scripture 2. Deviations in doctrine of the Trinity 3. Exclusivity of Christ (to include the subject must the gospel be preached in order for people to be saved) 4. Distortions of doctrine based on the love of God 5. Substitutionary Atonement - why is this important and why is it being so attacked

We now are going to transition in our study from the incommunicable attributes to those that are communicable. Communicable attributes are the attributes that God in His grace and mercy shares with us in finite measure. But before we go into the communicable attributes I want to bring our focus back to:
Plan of the Bible

The unfolding and progressive redemption of mankind by God
Theme of the Bible

The glory of God The Christian life never moves beyond the understanding of these two truths we just move further into them

The theme of the Bible is ³the glory of God´
Who is the most God-centered person in the universe? Who is uppermost in God affections? What is the primary jealousy of God? What is the chief end of God? Do you feel more loved because God makes much of you? OR because at the cost of His Son He enables you to make much of Himself? Are you God centered because you believe you are supremely valuable to Him? OR are you God centered because He is supremely valuable to you?

Biblical truth #1
If your passion and enthusiasm for God is going to continue and endue Then it will need to be rooted in God¶s passion and enthusiasm for Himself

Biblical truth #2 If God is only a means to your own self interests and desires (health, wealth and prosperity via a change to make your life better) Rather than your seeing God as wonderfully and incredibly glorious then you need to check your conversion

A definition of glory: ³The glory of God is the beauty and excellence of his manifold perfections.´ It is an attempt to put into words what God is like in his magnificence and purity. It refers to his infinite and overflowing fullness of all that is good. The term might focus on his different attributes from time to time² like his power and wisdom and mercy and justice²because each one is indeed awesome and beautiful in its magnitude and quality. But in general God's glory is the perfect harmony of all his attributes into one infinitely beautiful and personal being.´
