Celebrating the Aerospace Industry

Brief: A feasibility study into the commissioning, development and installation of a major piece of contemporary art celebrating the aerospace industry in the North West of England.

Expectation & Context

Ken Hudson, leader of Preston Council, said the statue could help put Preston on the map like the Angel of the North, an iconic 66ft-tall artwork close to the A1, did for Gateshead.

Atoll: 2007-10 Public Art Curator & Commissioning

Key Experience: More specifically, developed 2007 Public Art at the Waterfront Strategy for Widnes Waterfront EDZ and Halton Borough Council, resulting in the commissioning of Tonkin Liu¶s £150k Future Flower with wind-generated and interactive LED lighting in 2010.

Celebration & Festival

Blackpool 'Flying Week' was held at Squires Gate in October 1909, the world's second international aviation meeting after that held at Rheims in August. In July/August 1910, the Blackpool 'Flying Carnival' met with even greater success.

Atoll: 2005 Cultural Tourism Visioning

Key Experience: In 2005 collaborated with artist Michael Trainor on the design and feasibility for Eye Con - working with Taylor Young to develop concepts for a relocatable light and projection pod; a Festival of Moving Image for St Helens BC www.lookingforhelen.net

Local History & Regional Gateway

Manchester¶s Alliott Verdon Roe, was the first British person to fly an all-British aeroplane, powered by a British engine, over British soil (Avro Triplane 1909).

Atoll: 2008-09 Community Gateway Strategy

Key Experience: Created µCyclorama¶ orbit of city community gateways, with project / site feasibilities and precedent studies as part of the 2008 public art strategy and gateway strategy for Preston City Council.

Atoll: 2009 UNESCO Arts-Interpretation

Key Experience: Developed in 2009 the µUniversala¶ public art interpretation strategy for Wearmouth-Jarrow UNESCO bid to celebrate St Bede and develop connected dual media and light installations between St Peter¶s church, Wearmouth and St Paul¶s church in Jarrow. Solicited Lead Artists are Nayan Kulkarni, Jason Bruges, Amenity Space and Jo Fairfax.

Teenagers from Lancashire competing in the 2010 Aircelle Make It in Aerospace challenge had to adapt a modern passenger jet to accommodate the whims and fancies of a celebrity

Atoll: 2008 Cultural Visioning

Key Experience: Completed Cultural Strategy with Taylor Young in 2008 for Weaver Valley Regional Park. Strategy included project identification, feasibility and economic appraisal. www.weavervalley.org.uk

Atoll: 2009 Collaborative Commissioning

Key Experience: In 2009 developed Hiddenplace festival with artist Noah Rose for Burnley ± a networking and temporary public art programme engaging with BDP¶s urban masterplan and commissioning 7 local artists. Won 2009 CreativityWorks Award for Best Use of Creative Space. www.hiddenplace.org.uk

Atoll: 2006-10 Public Art R&D

Key Experience: Integrated street art completed in Sunderland with commissioned Berlin artists KAPOK developing through R&D, a prototype for µurban accupuncture¶ and pressure points via new lighting, sunlight reflectors and sound µfriggers¶ with Aurora lighting contractors and US sound artist Bill Fontana.
