Celebrating the Aerospace Industry

Brief: A feasibility study into the commissioning, development and installation of a major piece of contemporary art celebrating the aerospace industry in the North West of England.

Expectation & Context

Ken Hudson, leader of Preston Council, said the statue could help put Preston on the map like the Angel of the North, an iconic 66ft-tall artwork close to the A1, did for Gateshead.

ACE NW: 2000 - 2004 Public Art & Architecture Officer

Key Experience: Created public art retrospective year book and web public art northwest and public art fiunding guidelines with ACE NW for NWDA in 2002

ACE NW: 2000 - 2004 Public Art & Architecture Officer

Key Experience: Public Art & Architecture Officer for ACE NW. Responsibilities included assisting Mid Pennine Arts, NWDA and RIBA Competitions in the initiation of the Panopticons programme. This included proposing with the branding name Panopticons, detailed design review analysis of Singing Ringing Tree, and soliciting key funding.

Key Experience: Chartered Architect with 24 years post-qualification experience ± including a diverse portfolio of desgining and project managing major capital projects and public art and architecture collaborations.

Fiona Banner¶s Tate Britain Harrier & Jaguar; the Spitfire Tribute Foundation Monument Proposal; and CityBrands concept for the BAE-inspired monument

Atoll: 2005-10 North West Public Art Strategies

Key Experience: Author in last 5 years of regional public realm strategies for Weaver Valley Regional Park and Cheshire East and Chester & Cheshire West Unitaries; and urban public art strategies including Preston, Lancaster and Carlisle City Councils and St. Helens, Halton and Burnley Borough Councils.

Atoll: 2007-10 Public Art Curator & Commissioning

Key Experience: More specifically, developed 2007 Public Art at the Waterfront Strategy for Widnes Waterfront EDZ and Halton Borough Council, resulting in the commissioning of Tonkin Liu¶s £150k Future Flower with wind-generated and interactive LED lighting in 2010.

Beam: 2005 - 2010 Icons of the North Visioning

Key Experience: In 2006 wrote the £4.5 million funding plan and commissioning strategy for the Northern Way¶s Icons of the North public art strategy for Beam and Arts Council England.

Atoll: 2008 Regional Park Support

Key Experience: 2008 Expert Group member for the Morecambe Bay & Duddon Regional Park, as organised by Mersey Basin Campaign¶s Regional Parks Xchange.

Celebration & Festival

Blackpool 'Flying Week' was held at Squires Gate in October 1909, the world's second international aviation meeting after that held at Rheims in August. In July/August 1910, the Blackpool 'Flying Carnival' met with even greater success.

Atoll: 2005 Cultural Tourism Visioning

Key Experience: In 2005 collaborated with artist Michael Trainor on the design and feasibility for Eye Con - working with Taylor Young to develop concepts for a relocatable light and projection pod; a Festival of Moving Image for St Helens BC

Atoll: 2005 Capital Funding Applications

Key Experience: In 2005 prepared the Big Lottery Fund bid for the Green Light Project as part of Blackpool Festival of Light.

Local History & Regional Gateway

Manchester¶s Alliott Verdon Roe, was the first British person to fly an all-British aeroplane, powered by a British engine, over British soil (Avro Triplane 1909).

Atoll: 2008-09 Community Gateway Strategy

Key Experience: Created µCyclorama¶ orbit of city community gateways, with project / site feasibilities and precedent studies as part of the 2008 public art strategy and gateway strategy for Preston City Council.

Atoll: 2009 UNESCO Arts-Interpretation

Key Experience: Developed in 2009 the µUniversala¶ public art interpretation strategy for Wearmouth-Jarrow UNESCO bid to celebrate St Bede and develop connected dual media and light installations between St Peter¶s church, Wearmouth and St Paul¶s church in Jarrow. Solicited Lead Artists are Nayan Kulkarni, Jason Bruges, Amenity Space and Jo Fairfax.

Engagement & Place-making

Teenagers from Lancashire competing in the 2010 Aircelle Make It in Aerospace challenge had to adapt a modern passenger jet to accommodate the whims and fancies of a celebrity

Atoll: 2008 Cultural Visioning

Key Experience: Completed Cultural Strategy with Taylor Young in 2008 for Weaver Valley Regional Park. Strategy included project identification, feasibility and economic appraisal.

Atoll: 2009 Collaborative Commissioning

Key Experience: In 2009 developed Hiddenplace festival with artist Noah Rose for Burnley ± a networking and temporary public art programme engaging with BDP¶s urban masterplan and commissioning 7 local artists. Won 2009 CreativityWorks Award for Best Use of Creative Space.

Founded in 1866, The Royal Aeronautical Society is a multidisciplinary professional institution dedicated to the global aerospace community.

Art & Architecture Journal: 2004-10 Press & Best Practice

Key Experience: Deputy Editor of Art & Architecture Journal since 2004. Regular articles written (for A&AJ as well as other publications), as well as strategic development work undertaken to develop A&AJ National Conferences.

Atoll: 2006-09 Arts Development Facilitation

Key Experience: Facilitation for ACE WM on a 3-year public art and regeneration engagement pilot within the West Midlands ± 2006 - 2009

Atoll: 2006-10 Public Art R&D

Key Experience: Integrated street art completed in Sunderland with commissioned Berlin artists KAPOK developing through R&D, a prototype for µurban accupuncture¶ and pressure points via new lighting, sunlight reflectors and sound µfriggers¶ with Aurora lighting contractors and US sound artist Bill Fontana. Other commissions included SDNA TV video projections and Charlie Davidson street furniture.

Atoll: 2007-08 Wayfinding

Key Experience: New media wayfinding explored in several styrategies to date, including work on Preston, Lancaster and Derby public art strategies.

Atoll: 2008-10 Integrated Art & Infrastructure

Key Experience: Design Team collaboration 2008-2010 with Landscape Architects Gillespies, and Engineers Arup on public art strategy for £25m Bradford Mirror Pool. Commissions for Janek Schaefer (sound installation), Wolfgang Buttress (sculptural light columns) and Haque Design + Research (interactive light projection & new media).
