    The Dairy Toolbox is a joint initiative currently under development by the International Livestock Research Centre and International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics. The project has defined a toolbox as: ‘a box with plenty of tools to carry out a job’ and went on to note: ‘The decision maker should be able to choose and use a hammer or a chainsaw according to his or her needs’. The toolbox will contain simple decision support tools as well as a broad range of modular information that be easily accessed and compiled to form customized fact-sheets or other extension materials on a wide range of dairy related topics. Participatory approaches were used with a broad range of stakeholders to identify real, largely unmet, information needs. The Dairy Toolbox is being constructed with both web and CD interfaces so that it can be modified, expanded and updated. CDs will be created at regular intervals (annually or biannually) to allow distribution of updated information for those without access to the internet. Many of the electronic tools contained in the toolbox will be used by the target institutions (extension workers, NGOs, producer groups, etc.) to produce customised paper-based tools for farmers /local extension workers to apply at field level where there is no access to either computers or the internet. The Toolbox will helps to overcome the constraints of poor access to appropriate information for a range of stakeholders including small-scale dairy farmers and extension delivery agents. It also addresses the problem that, in the past, materials which were available often focused on the technology and did not assist either delivery agents or their clients to consider whether particular practices are appropriate for their own circumstances. The toolbox allows users to consider whether the technology is appropriate as defined by client’s own objectives, management system, resource endowment or agro-climatic conditions.
