Prepositions
Really useful words which give important
information
They are used to link other words
Preposition

• They are words which show the relationship between one


thing and another by linking them.
• A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other
words in the sentence.
• The word or phrase introduced by the preposition is called
the object of the sentence.
Prepositions give
information
• Position: About a thing in relation to something else.
The juicy, red apple was on the book.

• When: The time in which one event is in relation to


another event.
She refused to leave the house until the postman
had left.

Where: About the position of one thing in relation to
another.
The gentle, brown dog slept beside the fluffy white
rabbit.

Direction: In which something is travelling in relation
to something else.
The gallant horseman was riding along the windy
shoreline.

Prepositions at the beginning of
sentences
Prepositions can be used at the begining of sentences
• Without fear, the brave child climbed the tall mountain.
• Under the four poster bed, the lazy cat was having a snooze.
• Inside the old house there were all sorts of strange looking
people.
• Along the hall crawled the large, spindly spider.
Along with other words

• Certain verbs, adjectives and nouns always go with certain


dependent prepositions:
• object to (something)
• participate in (something)
• complain about (something).
• Unfortunately there are no fixed rules that can help to
decide which dependent prepositions should be placed
with which words
• Just need to learn them.
They can change the
meaning
Sometimes different dependent prepositions change the
meaning of an expression
• She is angry with us: (angry with ‘someone’)
• He is angry about the problem: (angry about ‘a situation’)
• She is good at voleyball: (meaning she has skill / ability in
something – she is good at (playing) voleyball).
• She is good with children: (meaning she has a positive
relationship with / has an affinity with…)
