'What are you going to do, Rudolf?· said Rose. ¶You're twentynine, but you don't work. You don't do anything! The red-haired Rassendylls are all the same!· My brother Robert came into the room. Rose is Robert's wife. ¶Rose wants me to work, Robert,· I said. I looked at Rose and smiled. ¶And she doesn't like my red hair.· ¶You have red hair and the Elphberg nose, too,· Robert said. The story of my red hair is a hundred and fifty years old. In 1733 the young Prince Rudolf Elphberg came to England from Ruritania. The Elphbergs always had red hair and long noses. The young man fell in love with an English woman. Her name was Amelia Rassendyll. After a few months Rudolf returned to Ruritania. Some time he became the new King of Ruritania. Six months after Rudolf left, Amelia had a baby. This baby had red hair and a long nose. Five or six Rassendylls after 1733 also had red hair. I have red hair. My brother·s hair is black.

Rose looked up at the picture of Amelia on the wall. She did not like the picture. She did not like the Elphberg story. ¶But you don't do anything, Rudolf· she said. This was not true. I could speak many languages. I could ride any horse. But I liked Rose. ¶I'll find a job,· I said. ¶But first I want to go away for six months.· 'Where will you go?' 'I'm not sure. Did you see that story about Ruritania in The Times?' Robert nodded. 'Young Rudolf the Fifth is about to become King.' 'Perhaps I could go to his coronation in Strelsau.' Robert and Rose looked at me in horror. No Rassendylls had ever been to Ruritania. ''Rudolf, you can't!' 'I was only joking,' I lied. ¶I'm going to go walking in Austria,·

' he told me. He wants to marry the Princess.' 'Tell me about them.' ¶Is Black Michael in Paris now?· I asked.he's the half. ¶No.THE JOURNEY TO STRELSAU I went first to Paris. I bought my ticket.· The next day George and I went to the station. 'Two of the most famous people in Ruritania have been here in Paris.· said George. Many people in Ruritania don't like him. 'The beautiful Antoinette de Mauban and ¶Black· Michael of Strelsau.· . George talked to a very beautiful woman. He's in Ruritania for the of the new King. I stayed a night with my friend George.' ''Antoinette is a rich young woman. ¶That's Antoinette de Mauban. ¶You're lucky!· he told me after. ¶But I don't think that Michael will marry Antoinette. She's in love with Black Michael . She's also going to Dresden.

I could see the castle from the hotel. Its Michael of Strelsau castle. It was about a mile from the town. The new King only came back to the country last week. ¶You won't find a hotel in Strelsau tonight. ¶There are too many people there for the Coronation. But Antoinette did not speak to me on the train.· I quickly changed my plans.· . I had dinner with the old woman and her daughter. Antoinette stayed on the train. ¶He lives here in Ruritania. and got off the train at Zenda. It is about fifty miles from Strelsau.· said the old lady. I watched the train move away. An old lady gave me a room in her hotel. Zenda is a quiet town with a famous castle. When we crossed into Ruritania I asked the ticket collector about hotels in Strelsau.· he said. I went into the town.

¶ ¶And now no one knows him,· said the daughter. ¶My Johan told me.· ¶Johan works for Michael in his forest,· said the old lady. ¶He has a hunting-lodge there. The King is staying in the hunting-lodge now. He only likes hunting, and drinking and pretty girls. I want Michael to be King.· ¶I do not like Black Michael,· said the daughter. ¶I want an Elphberg with red hair.· She looked at me and laughed.¶Where is Michael now?· I asked. ¶He's in Strelsau for the Coronation.·¶Then why is the King here? Are he and Michael friends?· ¶Yes,· said the old woman. The daughter laughed. ¶Two men want to be King. And two men want the same wife.· ¶Who do they want to marry?· I asked. ¶Princess Flavia. Black Michael - ¶

Suddenly we heard an angry voice. ¶Who said ¶Black Michael·?· It was Johan. He saw me and stopped. ¶What's the matter, Johan?· asked the daughter. ¶This young man is from England. He is staying with us. He wants to see the Coronation on Wednesday.· Johan left the room. The daughter said, ¶Johan doesn't like the colour of your hair.· I smiled and said, ¶The colour of a man's hair is not important.· But I was wrong!

I sat against a tree and closed my eyes. Behind a very big old building there was a new building. Between the two buildings there was a moat. We work for the King of Ruritania. My plan was to catch the train at a small station on the other side of the forest. I walked on into the forest. ¶I am Rudolf Rassendyll. I walked up the hill to the Castle. I stood up and smiled. A drawbridge crossed the moat.· .· I took off my hat and answered. It was very beautiful. ¶It isn't possible! He is the King. Suddenly he said. I come from England. My name is Fritz. The other was younger and darker. Everyone here in Ruritania knows about Amelia. The Castle The next morning I sent my bags to Strelsau. ¶ Your hair tells me your story.· I opened my eyes and saw two men. After some time I became tired. The younger man also smiled ¶This is Sapt. One was short and strong.· Sapt looked at me. Suddenly I heard a voice.

¶What will Michael say? Now he has two brothers. ¶But I don't meet a new ¶brother· every day.who is this man?· Sapt came between the King and me. I looked at him .· said Fritz.· ¶You mustn't go to Strelsau.Fritz . Rudolf Rassendyll was the King.· I told the King.· The King laughed again.· said Sapt. A young man came up to us. you must stay have dinner with me · he answered.· said Fritz.· said the King. ¶No.Suddenly we heard a voice. ¶It's the King. ¶ ¶But were leaving early tomorrow. ¶I know. Well have dinner tonight. The King did not speak. '¶Sapt . Then he began to laugh. ¶There is danger there. He said something in the Kings ear.· ¶I will leave Ruritania today. ¶What are you doing here in Ruritania?· ¶I am going to the Coronation in Strelsau.and it was like looking in a mirror! We were identical! The King of Ruritania was Rudolf Rassendyll.' .

Fritz tried to stop the King. Then he took the bottle and drank all the wine. ¶Open the bottle!· Joseph opened the bottle. But the King did not stop. ¶This is from Michael of Strelsau. His name was Joseph. That night we ate a very big dinner. ¶We must leave early tomorrow morning. A little man met us. At midnight Joseph came into the room with a very old bottle of wine.· he said.· said Joseph. ¶Thank you.A Present From Black Michael We walked to the hunting lodge. We also drank many bottles of wine. It was a small building. That is all I remember of that night . Black Michael!· said the King. The King drank a glass.

‡What do you think will happen next? ‡What will happen to: ‡The king? ‡Rudolf Rassendyll? ‡Black Michael? .

· said Sapt.THE KING GOES TO STRELSAU I opened my eyes. ¶We threw water over him. We were afraid. ¶And look at the King. I remembered the last bottle . He did not move. I was very angry.· ¶There's no doctor near here.· said Sapt. My face. Sapt and Fritz were near me. Sapt kicked him.what was in it?· ¶We must get a doctor. He will not move for six or seven hours. ¶And a thousand doctor cannot help us. ¶Why did you throw water over me?· ¶Its five o'clock. ¶But it was no good.· I looked at Sapt and Fritz. His face was red.· . hair and clothes were all wet. too.· The King was on the floor.· said Fritz.

Are you afraid?· ¶don't say that!· ¶I'm sorry.· said Sapt.· said Sapt. ¶You can help us. I·ll go. ¶We must send a message to Strelsau. ¶And Black Michael knows that. You can be the King at the coronation.¶What about the Coronation?· ¶The King is ill.· ¶Half the people in Strelsau want Black Michael to be King. Then Sapt spoke to me.· We said nothing. ¶You can go to Strelsau.· ¶Nobody will believe it. ¶But the King is in great danger.· ¶But it is not possible!· I said. ¶And now it will happen.· said Fritz. ¶There is some danger.· said Sapt.· I said. .· he said.· ¶Yes.

A few minutes later they began to cut the hair from my face. ' Fritz will keep everyone away from the Kings bedroom. You will leave the country. But we can't escape danger.¶Tonight we will be in the Palace. ¶Well do it!· .· ¶What will happen if they find him?· ¶They won't find him.' 'And then what will happen?' 'The King will ride with me to Strelsau.' said Sapt. ¶What will you do with the King?· I asked.· Sapt left the room. He returned with Joseph. After Fritz said. You and I will ride back here. ¶I·ll leave him in the wine cellar.· Joseph worked on me for half an hour. Joseph will stop them.

After some time we came to a beautiful old church. . Near the palace there were many people on the streets. One was the face of a beautiful girl with red hair. The other was my ¶brother·. Some threw flowers at me. Fritz and Sapt walked behind me. Now I was not afraid. Her mouth moved. I walked past the great men and beautiful women. But I only remember two things about the coronation. I was the King. Many important men were at the station.I Was The King I got off the train in Strelsau. I caught one and wore it on my coat. I looked up and saw Antoinette de Mauban! She looked at me for a long time. Black Michael. I put my hand down to my gun. But nothing happened. But Black Michael did not come to meet us. I heard music. We travelled on horses through Strelsau.

¶The Princess Flavia!· She took my hand and kissed it.nicer. ¶You must be careful about Black Michael. The woman with red hair came to me from her place. Then she said quietly. Somebody called out. He wants . I kissed her twice on the face. ¶Its thinner and . Someone said . She was very beautiful! Michael came and kissed my hand. ¶When are you going to marry her?· Princess Flavia sat beside me. We went back to the palace with Princess Flavia.· She smiled. I heard people call from the street for Black Michael. I was a little afraid. ¶Your face is different today.· she said suddenly. Rudolf. He was afraid.¶ . He did not look at me.

Are you ready?· . He wants to marry a princess. Black Michael looked very angry. Later that night I sat with Fritz and Sapt. We were at the Palace. ¶We must go. But perhaps I will marry her one day.· Princess Flavia looked at me.· said Sapt. ¶But you must be careful. but she said nothing. You talked to the Princess for a long time. Then I heard music and the sound of guns. We were in one of the Kings rooms. ¶You'll remember this day!· said Fritz. Sapt and Fritz were happy.¶I know! He wants to be King. ¶Forget her. I was very tired.· ¶She is very beautiful!· I said.

.· Sapt took me through a secret door in the wall. ¶Remember. We came out on a quiet street behind the Palace gardens. the King is very tired. The Road To Zenda I was ready.· Sapt then turned to me. We rode out of the city and on to the road to Zenda. ¶In seven hours I will be Rudolf Rassendyll again. but I did not want to go. You'll look like one of my men. ¶Put on this coat and hat.· ¶You will stay here. Fritz. It was five o·clock. He does not want to see anybody. A man was there with two horses for us.· said Sapt.

Finally Black Michael cried ¶To Zenda!· and they rode away . Black Michael hesitated. We rode on and came to the forest of Zenda. ·he said. We hid the horses and waited behind a tree. The message said.· said the second man.· Michael hesitated a moment longer. ¶I didn't hear anything. ¶Why don't we go to the hunting-lodge?· ¶Because they may be waiting for us there. Sapt put his hand on his gun. ¶All is well.Three hours later Sapt suddenly stopped.· And we don't want to lose time. They were only a mile behind us. ¶Listen!· he said. Sapt had his gun in his hand. 'I thought I heard horses. I listened and heard the sound of horses.

We went into the room where we had been the night before. All was quiet. He was dead. We got off our horses.. Let's ride to the lodge as fast as we can.· I answered. What did it mean? Was all well with the King? At last the lodge came into sight. .' said Sapt. 'I don't know. Suddenly Sapt caught me by the arm. His face went white. 'I just hope the King is safe. The door the wine cellar was open. 'Look there!' he said pointing to the ground. I looked down and saw Joseph on the floor. We rode up to the gate. It was unlocked. We went down the stairs. ¶The King is not here.' We rode on to the lodge in silence. 'Someone has just been here. 'They've sent him news that 'all is well' 'But what does that mean?' I asked. We were both very worried. Suddenly Sapt cried out. Sapt said. ¶Where is the King?· he cried. 'All is well'. There was food from our dinner and bottles on the table. Is the King Safe? We waited for ten minutes before coming out. Sapt looked at me. We hurried towards the door.

Then well fight Michael. ¶Well get every man in the city. The King will be in his Palace again.· .· I said. ¶The King is in danger. Suddenly he began to laugh. ¶We can't stay here. When did he get it?· ¶He had the message before your coronation. We must go. But what is he doing now?· I stood up. ¶They've got the King!· ¶Yes. ´All is wellµ. well go back to Strelsau.WHERE IS THE KING? I helped Sapt up the stairs.· I answered. Come on. For ten minutes we sat in silence. ¶Yes. ¶That was the message to Black Michael.· I said. Then Sapt took his hands from his face and said.· Again Sapt did not answer.· ¶I don't understand. ¶We must go back to Strelsau.· Sapt did not answer.

· Sapt got up. Go back and be the King. ¶They cannot say. Black Michael will tell his story.· ¶But will they kill the King?· ¶No. Come back to Strelsau with me.· ¶But Michael knows . they won·t.¶We cannot tell the people our story. but they can't say anything. too.µ But we must have a King in Strelsau.· said Sapt. The King is our prisoner.and with the King. ¶¶This man is not the King. They'll be very angry us . Its too dangerous for them. He put his hand on my arm. And they will believe him.¶ ¶Yes. ¶You can help the King.· .

I killed two men. . ¶We must go now. ¶Now!· said Sapt.· I said. ¶We must do something for poor Joseph. Far away I could see men on horses.· We hid with our horses behind the lodge. After a few minutes we heard a voice. Someone cut my hand. We rode away fast. I carried Joseph up the stairs.· We went outside. Will They Try To Kill Me? Sapt went and found some new horses. ¶That was for little Joseph!· I said. ¶Come on.· said Sapt. ¶Michael's men are coming here. Sapt killed one. We rode to the front of the lodge and fought Michael's men.

Remember. ¶Whereas the King?· he said. Sapt turned to me. We found Fritz.· he said to me. We rode in the same gate. We went to the Kings rooms in the Palace. We were very tired. . ¶You're doing well. He looked at me. boy.· Somebody came to the door. Get into bed. Sapt smiled. We came to Strelsau in the early morning. The streets were very quiet after the coronation. Fritz looked at me again. Take off your hat and shoes. After breakfast I met many important people. you're now the King!· A King works very hard. ¶He is in the hands of Black Michael. ¶The King!· he said. That night they came to my room. ¶Go into the bedroom. For many hours I could not talk to Fritz and Sapt.

· said Sapt. ¶Black Michael is back in Strelsau.¶We must do something.' . ¶You must be very careful.· said Sapt.· said Sapt. ¶They are six men. One of the Six is from your country. ¶Perhaps. And he can't tell anybody out us.· said Fritz. we can't. ¶Are we going after Black Michael?· ¶No. ¶You will meet them soon.· ¶Who are the Six?· I asked.· ¶He'll kill the King. They will do anything for him. We must wait. Half of the ¶Six· are with him. ¶We can't tell anybody about Black Michael. ¶He won't. But we cannot do anything now. Three must be in Zenda with the King. They live in Michael's house.· ¶Will they try to kill me?· I asked.· said Fritz.· said Sapt.

Black Michael Comes to Visit The next day I went to see the Princess Flavia.· ¶My brother is back in Strelsau. Suddenly the Princess said.· ¶Thank you. ¶Are you trying to make him angry?· ¶ What? Who?· ¶Michael is waiting outside. ¶Its Michael of Strelsau!· she said I smiled. The Princess went back to her seat. I talked about different things.· I said.¶ ¶Watch him better?· We both smiled.· ¶Why doesn't he come in?· . ¶We can . We talked a little more about Michael and the Six. ¶But what do I call you now?· ¶Please call me by my name.· she said. ¶The people speak well of their King. Rudolf. She did not like him! I was very happy. Suddenly we heard the sound of a horse. Princess Flavia ran to the window.

· said Sapt.· said Fritz. ¶You must be very careful.· said Sapt. Rudolf. ¶They are six men. They live in Michael's house. He looked very angry. Three must be in Zenda with the King. And he can't tell anybody out us.' I opened the door. We must wait. ¶We can't tell anybody about Black Michael. They will do anything for him. Half of the ¶Six· are with him.· ¶Who are the Six?· I asked. ¶I never remember these things. ¶He won't.· ¶Will they try to kill me?· I asked. You know that!· ¶I'm sorry.· said Sapt. ¶Are we going after Black Michael?· ¶No. .She looked surprised. ¶You will meet them soon. ¶Perhaps. Nobody can come in with you here.· ¶We must do something. we can't. But we cannot do anything now. ¶Black Michael is back in Strelsau. One of the Six is from your country.· said Sapt. ¶You are in the room.· ¶He'll kill the King. Michael sat at a table.· I said.· said Fritz. Three more men stood near him.

¶Will you meet my friends?· They came and kissed my hand. Soon after I said goodbye to Princess Flavia.· ¶You cut your hand . My brother and his friends left. ¶Be careful!· ¶About what?· ¶You know . The third was the English man.· I said. ¶Its good to see you. Detchard.· she said. ¶Friends?· ¶And to a Princess.I can't say. But remember you're important to Ruritania.¶My dear brother. Black Michael looked at me. He had a red face and short yellow hair . The second was a fat man called Bersonin. He was tall and thin.· she said in a quiet voice.· he said. too.· I said. . The first was De Gautet. I kissed her hand and left. ¶How did you do that?· ¶In a game with a dog. I could not speak. ¶Rudolf.· ¶Am I only important to Ruritania?· ¶You're important to your friends. Suddenly he said.

¶Where does she want to meet you?· asked Sapt. ¶Black Michael sent that letter.· Sapt laughed.· ¶And why does she want to meet you?· ¶She has a message for me. ¶Who opens it?· ¶Only Hentzau or Black Michael. Their names are Lauengram.· he said. ¶Three of the Six are there with him. It was from a woman. There's summerhouse there. . I opened it and read it out to Sap.· he said. Kaufstein and Rupert Hentzau. ¶The King is at the Castle of Zenda.· Sapt gave me a letter. ¶In a garden at the end of New Avenue. She wanted me to meet her at twelve o'clock that night. The drawbridge stays up.A MESSAGE FROM THE CASTLE A week later Sapt came to see me. But I must not tell anyone.

· At half-past eleven that night we rode to the place. Then I said.· said Sapt. We found the door. I carried a light. There was more on the other side. I also had a gun and a sword. We came to the house. ¶You can go. But after some time he said. I told Sapt the story of Antoinette de Mauban. A wall went round the garden.I turned the letter over. I got off my horse. ¶I'll go. ¶I'll wait here. ¶It's Antoinette de Mauban!· I said.· Sapt did not want me to go. I think that she can help us. It was a very dark night. But I will come with you to the garden. ¶Good luck!· .

· she said. The other three will kill the King. ¶Shut the door. In twenty minutes three men will be here. Now go! And be careful!· I took her hand and kissed it. Somebody will find you. ¶I know you. They'll kill you and leave you in the Old Town. But why are you telling it to me?· ¶I don't want Michael to marry the princess.. She was beautiful..· she said. I shut the door and looked at the woman. too. Michael wrote that letter.· ¶Its a clever plan. Michael will then send a message to Zenda. ¶Where is he in the Castle?· ¶Across the drawbridge you come to a heavy door. ¶You are helping the King tonight. Mr Rassendyll.· ¶Three . I pushed the door open.'They'll Kill You' I opened the door and walked across the garden to the summer house. Behind the door . A woman stood before me. ¶don't talk.· I said. They'll kill you. Her clothes were beautiful. Listen! What's that?· . Michael will then become King and marry the Princess.the three?· ¶Yes.

They're too soon!· Her face went white.· The door opened.· said Antoinette in my ear. with the table in my hands. I shot back. ¶They're coming. ¶I will take your money. . ¶Stand close to the wall. Detchard. Well help you leave Ruritania. They shot at me. I turned to Antoinette. I ran at them. He shot at me again. I hit them with the table. I went to the door. We all fell down. Open the door.· I said. we want to talk to you. I called out. ¶Can we come in? We can help you. Well give you fifty thousand pounds. Then I climbed over the garden wall. From outside came the sound of footsteps. I stood up and laughed. In the summer house there was a small tea-table.· said the English man. Detchard was under the table. I saw the three men with their guns ready. ¶Mr Rassendyll. I understood their plan.· ¶They'll kill you.· I said. ¶Give me a minute. I took it in my hands.

¶How is my friend Detchard?· Fritz smiled. ¶De Gautet.· said Sapt. ¶Good.· ¶She loves you. She bought a ticket to Dresden.· said Fritz.'They want the King to marry Princess Flavia quickly' The next day Fritz and Sapt came to see me. But the train stops at Zenda. She wants you to show her love. ¶And she is very sad.· I laughed. ¶She left by train at twelve o'clock.· he said. They want the King to marry Princess Flavia quickly. ¶He cannot move his arm. ¶Black Michael left Strelsau this morning. ¶The people here in the city are angry. Did Antoinette de Mauban go with them?· ¶No.· That night I danced many times with Princess Flavia. They went on the road to Zenda. Bersonin and Detchard went with him.· ¶We are doing well!· ¶No!· said Sapt. . You must talk to her.· he told me.· ¶What can I do?· ¶There is a dance tonight in the city. And the Princess is angry with the King.

. Rudolf Rassendyll won her love. Who won her love? It was not the King.· I said. She was very beautiful! What could I do? I forgot the King in Zenda. I kissed her hand. Everybody looked at us.· he said. Later we drank coffee in a small room.· ¶Flavia. I took her in my arms.· I said. But I was very. ¶I love you more than anything in the world!· ¶I did not love you before the coronation. ¶Is it true? Do you love me? Or do you only love your country?· ¶It is true!· I answered. Suddenly she pushed me away. ¶I don't love 'the King'. It was Sapt.· We went back. Rudolf. I looked at in her eyes. ¶I am sorry. The dance ended. ¶To you I am the King .We were happy together. very sad. ¶I want to tell you something. The Princess looked very happy. I forgot everything. He looked angry. ¶Everybody is waiting for the King.· said the Princess.¶ ¶I love you. But now I do!· I was very happy. ¶I am not -· Suddenly a man came into the room.

¶Please. my love.· She was angry with me. She was very afraid.· I told her.. ¶I am leaving Strelsau for a short time. Then she began to cry. ¶What is it?· I asked. don't go into danger.. I am going after Michael. this hunt is not . ¶I'm going hunting. I gave my love to a different King!· I took her in my arms. Rudolf! When will you be back?· ¶I don't know. ¶You were not like this before the coronation.· Her face became white.· ¶Come soon. I will see you once more!· . Rudolf! Please come soon!· ¶I will. ¶My love. She did not speak again for a few minutes..The next day I went to see Flavia.· ¶Is it not interesting here? I am sorry.

I liked Rupert better than the other two. They were all bad. ¶This prisoner.· ¶I am sorry. too?· Rupert smiled. .· Michael sent three men to see us. And he was afraid of nothing. It was in a forest about five miles from Zenda.· ¶Michael thinks that I want to be King. Sapt spoke to them about the prisoner at Zenda. He is very sorry about that. He'll kill me first! Then heel kill the King. They were the other half of the Six Lauengram. ¶is a friend of the King. ¶Hess ill. Michael is holding him at the Castle.·. Kaufstein and Rupert Hentzau Rupert spoke for the others.· I laughed. We told everyone.· I said. ¶We cant fight at the Castle Michael will kill the King.· ¶What can we do?· said Fritz to Sapt and me.· I said. They all loved the King. He was twenty two or twenty three.PART 4: YOUNG RUPERT HENTZAU Fritz found a house for us. Hess waiting for us. ¶We are here to hunt. He had a message from Michael. ¶How is my friend Detchard? Is he ill. but Rupert was clever. ¶And he cannot see anyone. ¶He wont kill the King now. He knows were here. Ten men came with us.· he said.· said Rupert. ¶He will soon feel better.

You will walk home with him.· ¶You must send Johann a message. We took a room for the night. then! We saw your picture. Oh. They say there is a woman there now.Young Rupert Of Hentzau They left soon after. I gave her some money. I moved the coat from my face. he is at the Castle. Is Johann here?· ¶No. . I am sorry!· ¶You did nothing wrong. We finished dinner. He must meet you tomorrow night at ten o'clock on the road to Zenda. I covered my face and we went out again. ¶Are you Ill?· she asked. The old woman did not know me.· She was a little afraid. Later her daughter brought dinner to our room. I covered my face with my coat. ¶It was the King. But tonight there is something important. Later that night Fritz and I went to the village of Zenda. You must say nothing about the King to anybody. The girl called out in surprise.

¶Rassendyll.· he said.· I said. I like you. He sat down next to me. His left hand was in his coat. Black Michael will marry her. ¶I want to help you. ¶Go. But you must leave Ruritania. or I'll kill you.· I laughed. ¶Is the answer ¶¶no··?· Rupert smiled happily. ¶I have a message from Michael. and -¶ I got up. I sent the others away. . Then he turned to me. How is you prisoner?· ¶Hess not dead.'Michael Will Give You Gold' The next morning Rupert Hentzau came back to the house.· ¶What's the message?· ¶Michael will give you gold. Rupert turned to his horse. ¶You'll be dead first. And how is your pretty Princess? I know you like her very much. ¶Then we'll kill you!· Again I laughed. But it's no good.· he began. I watched his right hand.

I opened my eyes.· he said.· said Johann. Rupert jumped on his horse and rode away. ¶¶Its to take you from this world to the next world!·· he said. My friends shot at him. Fritz was there. But it was too late. Then I heard noise. Rupert laughed.'· . And weave got Johann here. The sword cut my arm. ¶We cleaned the cut. ¶Does the King know about this plan. Rupert Hentzau watched. We were all afraid.· Johann answered. He was afraid of nothing.Suddenly I saw the sword in his left hand. Sept and Fritz carried me to bed. ¶It'll soon be better.· ¶Bring him in.· I said. I slept for some time. I looked at Sapt and Fritz. But it was no good. But they must kill you first. The King asked about the pipe. ¶I put the pipe there. I called out and fell back. ¶Will they kill the King?· ¶Yes. ¶Yes.

They can also leave the Castle through the pipe.¶ Sapt looked at me. ¶Michael.· ¶We wont kill you.¶How is the King?· ¶Very bad. Johann came into the room. ¶will kill me. And there is a pipe going from the inner room down into the moat. ¶We must do something soon. But he wanted to help us. Johann told us about two rooms below the Castle. They will drop the dead King down the pipe into the water. Johann was very afraid.· I told him.· he said. I know too much. He·s very ill. They can kill him at any time. Only one room had a small window.· . ¶There are always three of the Six in the outside room. Sapt walked behind him and pushed a gun in his back. The King is in the inner room. I don't know how long . This looked out onto the moat.· he said.

¶Michael doesn't want you dead . It was Detchard. We did not go through the town of Zenda. Then I heard the King speak. Fritz. It was too dangerous! I could do no more that night! . Anything is better than this!· A second person spoke. There were lights in the new building. Three of the men hid. It was very big. We came to the moat. We met nobody. I found the pipe. Sapt and I went on. I could see the light from the Kings room. It was not cold. The next night we went out. I carried my sword. The door closed. We stopped near the castle. I swam closer and looked inside. The King began to cry. ¶I want my brother to kill me. It was dark and wet. I did not call to him.not now! You must wait! Sleep well!· The light went. I climbed down into the moat. I could not see much. Sapt and Fritz brought horses and men. I swam round the walls. We climbed up to he castle.

· He spoke more quietly.· Suddenly Rupert was very happy. ¶I don't want to fight. . ¶Bring him to me. ¶Come with your men to the castle tomorrow. ¶Remember this.· ¶You're the worst man in the world!· I said. ¶You'll get your princess. And when Sapt.· ¶What!· ¶ . I'll tell you the time. The Princess is a beautiful girl. And for me . perhaps. ¶I want to talk. ¶You listen to me.· He slowed his horse ¶You can help the King.a little money. But I started to laugh. ¶No. ¶You'll be King. I like beautiful girls. I wanted to kill him.'You'll Be King' The next morning I rode out to the forest . He turned quickly.· I said.· he said. After an hour I saw Rupert Hentzau in front of me.· I said. Fritz and Michael are all dead . I rode after him. There'll be a fight. Then there'll be only two men: Rupert Hentzau and the King of Ruritania.· Rupert smiled.· he said.Well drop the dead prisoner down the pipe into the moat.

I opened it. You know her. And there was very little time left. I wanted to learn something about Michael and Rupert.¶You are one of the Michael's men. ¶Was it about a woman?· I asked. That's not it. a beautiful one. Are you now against him?· He said some bad things about Black Michael. How could I help Antoine? Everyone at the castle was ready to fight us.· ¶And does Michael wants your girl?· ¶No. ¶I almost put a sword in him last night. She likes him better.· ¶Did we meet round the tea table? With your friends?· ¶You were lucky! I wasn't there.· Now I was not angry. There was a letter there for me. Then he said. ¶Yes. But perhaps I can change that! Now I m I rode back to the house. .

She will marry the best man in the country. I sent a message to the newspaper in Strelsau. The next day the message was on the front page of the newspaper. 'What happened?' 'Rupert laughed at Michael. Antoinette de Mauban sees him every day. He said. The people in Strelsau were angry. He's too ill to move easily. Johann brought us news from the castle. Rupert and Antoinette de Mauban when the newspaper arrived. And the Princess is lucky. 'I was with Black Michael.' he told us. They wanted him to marry Princess Flavia. "Rassendyll is a better King than you.' . They wanted the King back in his palace.' 'And how is the King?' 'Very bad. He's in great danger.

I'll swim to the drawbridge and meet Rupert. ¶You must give this to her. Then I gave him a message for Antoinette de Mauban. At the same time Antoinette de Mauban will call out: 'Help! Michael. ¶Rupert will be in the other building.and Sapt·s men will get him.· . Then at two o'clock tomorrow morning go to the front door of the new building. He'll hear his name and come out.· Johann was very afraid. Michael will be very angry with Rupert. Open the door and then run. My men will lower the drawbridge. Johann will open the door for you. help!' Then she will call out the name of Rupert Hentzau. But he went back to the Castle. I'll fight Rupert . I told them my plan. I called Sapt and Fritz. you will take some men to the front door.We asked Johann many more questions. He will run out . ¶Sapt.I hope I kill him! Then the other men will leave the King and come out.

and she replied: ¶I will jump into the moat!· He looked out of the window. This was Michael's room. It was too early! Then he said something I could not hear. It was Rupert. ¶Tell him that!· Suddenly a door opened.· said Rupert with a laugh. I saw Antoinette·s pretty head. A man said. I looked at the new house. He laughed.¶ Rupert laughed. ¶Why do you love Black Michael? He already has the Princess. Someone opened the window and looked out. Near the drawbridge on the right there was a window. ¶She was sad because you were not there. The drawbridge was above me to the right. Then he kissed her quickly.· . He put his arm around her.At one o'clock the next night I swam to the pipe. ¶What are you doing here?· ¶I was helping this young woman. Then a man came out. The window for Antoinette·s room was to the left of the drawbridge. Suddenly there was a light in Michael's room.' ¶I'll tell him . She moved away.

Some men pulled it up behind him. I heard the sound of a key in the door. I was not the only man with a plan that night. ¶The drawbridge will go up in ten minutes. There was no light in Michael's room.· said Michael. I wanted to fight. ¶You can leave us. I swam to the drawbridge. Now I saw the other man. I wanted to swim out to him. I watched. He climbed up steps in the wall to the gate. I waited near the gate and listened. I waited. It was Black Michael. I looked up and saw a man climb the wall to my right. It was Rupert again. He had his sword. Rupert walked back across the drawbridge. Then I climbed up the wall. But the King was more important. But there was light from one of the other windows. He was very angry. . And you don't want to swim to your bed. Rupert swam under the water. Then he took out a key. Ten minutes later I heard a sound.

Only Detchard and Bersonin were with the King.Help! The moat was now between Rupert and the King. help! Michael. De Gautet was in bed. Michael Hentzau!· . A man called out. Then I heard the sound of a key in a door. I knew it was Rupert. It was not two o'clock when there was a sudden noise. I waited for my friends to arrive with the keys. Michael's room was dark. ¶Open the door!· It was Black Michael. There was light in Antoinette de Mauban·s room. The answer came from the words in my letter: ¶Help. The light in the window went out. help!· Then I heard another sound. The I heard Antoinette: ¶Help.

Five or six men fought him. Then everything happened too quickly. There was noise everywhere. I watched Rupert over the moat. Rupert stood there with his sword. I heard Michael call out. How could he open the door for me? Perhaps he was dead. But he was too good for them. He was at the window. But nobody came. ¶Johann. Doors opened all round the castle. ¶Help!·. . this is for you! And now for Michael!· Johann was with Michael. He turned and jumped back into the room. It came from near the King's room. Then there was a noise from above me. Antoinette·s window opened.

Detchard was not there. ¶What is happening?· someone said.· A key turned in the door. ¶Wait. I closed the door and went through. It was time.'Do We Kill Him Now?' Suddenly Rupert jumped up to the window. Detchard was in the corner. There were people behind the door. I killed him with my sword. I did not see him after that. I ran down the steps. I took the biggest. The King's room! Detchard was in the King's room! . There were some steps down to a door. Then I turned . He laughed at all the men round him. Bersonin stood there with his sword in his hand. And another answered: ¶Do we kill him now?· Then I heard Detchard. We must not kill him too soon. I fought Bersonin and killed him. Then he jumped into the moat. It opened the door near me. I pushed through the door. De Gautet suddenly came through the door. There were only three. There was a second door. I took the keys from him.

Detchard tried to get to the King. Rudolf!· he said. He fell over the dead doctor. The doctor tried to stop him. ¶It's my brother. I pushed my sword into him. Detchard turned to me. The King fell down. I was very afraid. I was afraid for the King.I ran through the door. ¶Hit his legs!· The King laughed and pushed the chair in front of him. The doctor was in front of him. He cut my arm. brother!· He took up a chair. He could only move it a little. ¶Now you I am going to kill you!· he said. With a quick jump Detchard turned to the King. He hit hard. ¶I'll help you. But he moved too quickly. He drove me against the window and the pipe. . ¶Come on!· I called. Detchard pushed his sword into the doctor and turned to me. Detchard fought very well. The King was in the corner of the room. We fought hard. Then suddenly the King jumped up. Was the King dead? He did not move.

Then I heard Rupert again. ¶Whereas Black Michael? Michael. I could not stay with the King. Perhaps they were Michael's men. I went to the outside room. I did not understand. I could not fight for much longer. I listened. It was the laugh of Rupert Hentzau. But I knew that my men were not there. come and fight for her!· . I went slowly up the stairs. ¶Come over the bridge. Suddenly I heard a sound. Come And Fight For Her!' Suddenly I heard a loud noise from outside.· he called. I wanted to hear Sapt and my friends. I sat down against the door. There were men on the drawbridge.'Michael. I was very tired.

They were all afraid. you dog!· Rupert called. It was Antoinette de Mauban. You are my servants now!· Michael's men were very afraid. Her face was white and she looked very angry. ¶Hess dead! Hess dead!· ¶Dead!· said Rupert. ¶I won! Put those swords down. ¶Are you afraid? Come and fight me!· Suddenly a woman called out. Michael's men were there next to it.I opened the door and looked out. They were late. but I was very happy! Suddenly a woman came on to the drawbridge. He had a cut on his face. ¶Michael. He laughed. Rupert was at the centre of the bridge. Other men had swords. Some carried lights. Michael's men watched him. Then I saw that she had a gun. It was my men. . The bridge was down. But suddenly there was noise from a different part of the castle. I saw Johann with them.

' Antoinette lifted her gun again.I Ran After Him Antoinette shot at Rupert. I jumped into the water after him. It hit the door above my head. Rupert laughed and jumped into the moat. My sword was in my hand. it's you! What are you doing here?· He smiled down at me and ran off into the forest. He saw me. He swam on. I called to him. Rupert looked at her and said 'I can't kill a girl I've kissed. ¶Oh. Then he climbed out of the water. . I was tired. ¶Hello! Who's here?· he called. He swam quickly.

I could not go on. ¶Will the King . I pushed Fritz away and tried to get up. I saw a man on a horse. And it's because of you!· I closed my eyes. ¶Well meet again. I was very angry. I wanted to go after Rupert.· ¶Fritz!· I said. I wanted to kill him. I ran after him.I climbed out of the water.¶ ¶Yes. But I could not move. . Soon I went to sleep. ¶Give me the horse.· said Fritz. Rupert rode away fast. He had a gun in his hand. I called to him.· I cried. It was my friend Fritz. ¶The King will live.· he said. Fritz shot at Rupert. But he ran faster. But Fritz got off his horse. Rupert looked back and laughed at me. I was very tired and very cold. He came and put his arm round me. Rupert Rassendyll. I stopped and looked back.

THE FUTURE? I went to see Princess Flavia for the last time. There was very little light. ¶I know!· She put her hand on my head. You are the only woman in the world for me.not the King. Rudolf! It was you I loved . But what can we do now?· ¶I must go away tonight. People must not see me. Sit down . ¶How hot your head is!· she said. She did not move.· I said quickly. ¶don't talk about that!· ¶Why not? I love you. But is love more important than my country?· .· I said. I walked up to her. Then I kissed her hand.¶ She took my arm. She was in a small beautiful room.· she said. ¶I love you.· ¶I want to come with you. I knew that she was afraid.· ¶Oh. ¶No. ¶I loved you the first time I saw you. The Princess stood by the window. ¶Flavia! Do you know .

He tells me all the news from Strelsau. ¶I cannot leave. I meet my friend Fritz. In the evenings we walk around the city. ¶My love! Perhaps we will never meet again. Kiss me! And go!· I kissed her. We talk about Sapt and about the King. And I must stay. She said my name again and again. Why did we meet? I don't know.'I Must Stay' I did not answer. Then I left her. Now I live a very quietly in England. For some minutes she did not speak. But I must stay. ¶Your love will always be with me. She came near and put her hand on my arm. Then she said. But you must go.· ¶My beautiful Princess!· I said. . I did not help her. Every year I go for a week to Dresden. She held me. And late at night we talk about Flavia. After a time she said. Rudolf. I must stay here for Ruritania. We often talk about young Rupert.· I said nothing.

The message is always the same. But everything I do is for her.Flavia always. ¶Rudolf .· Will I see her again? Will I see her face and her beautiful hair? I do not know. . In it there is a flower and a message.Every year Fritz carries with him to Dresden a little box.
