Precious Treasure Devotional

In Psalm 147, the psalmist wrote the following: 12. Praise Jehovah, O Jerusalem; Praise your God, O Zion. 13. For He has strengthened the bars of your gates; He has blessed your children within you.

In Psalm 147, the psalmist wrote the following: 14. He makes peace in your borders; He fills you with the finest of the wheat. 15. He sends out His commandment upon earth; His word runs very swiftly.

In Psalm 147, the psalmist wrote the following: 16. He gives snow like wool; He scatters the hoar-frost like ashes. 17. He casts forth His ice like morsels: Who can stand before His cold?

In Psalm 147, the psalmist wrote the following: 18. He sends out His word, and melts them: He causes His wind to blow, and the waters flow. 19. He shows His word unto Jacob, His statutes and His ordinances unto Israel.

In Psalm 147, the psalmist wrote the following: 20. He has not dealt so with any nation; and as for His ordinances, they have not known them. Praise you Jehovah.

This past week many across the nation celebrated the holiday by opening up brightly wrapped packages filled with precious treasure. Israel, too, had a precious treasure as well, but I often wonder if they ever realized it.

I wonder if the Old Testament people of Israel realized how privileged they were. This is what the psalmist addresses in today's passage. He's telling the Jewish people to praise the Lord because of all He had done for them.

“For He has strengthened the bars of your gates; He has blessed your children within you.” (verse 13) He gave them peace in their borders. He fed them. He gave them His Word and His Law.

He gave them land. “He has not dealt so with any nation; and as for His ordinances, they have not known them.” (verse 20) God deposited with Israel the precious treasure of His Word.

Notice what the psalmist says about the Word of God. Verse 15 tells us that God's Word runs: “He sends out His commandment upon earth; His word runs very swiftly.”

When God speaks, that Word goes out like a rapidly running messenger and accomplishes His purposes. God runs the universe by His Word. He decrees things, and they happen.

God's Word also melts obstacles. “He sends out His word, and melts them….” (verse 18) God's Word can melt the cold, hard heart.

Are you facing what is seemingly an impossible situation? The Word of God can melt any bars or walls and open the way for you.

Finally, God's Word blesses. “He shows His word unto Jacob, His statutes and His ordinances unto Israel…. Praise you Jehovah.” Read the Word of God. It's a great treasure that, when invested in your life, bears fruit.

God's Word runs and accomplishes His will. It melts and opens the way. And it blesses all who will receive it, obey it and trust it. God desires that you spend time daily appropriating the riches of His Word. Do you invest God's Word in your life?
