Sustainable development (SD) is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present. but also for generations to come .

W HY BP FOCUS ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT .

British Petroleum (BP) focuses on sustainable development because for the preservation of non-renewable sources for the coming generation Therefore BP used renewable sources of energy and trying to make the greener environment Renewable energy doesn t affect the environment That s why BP is known to be beyond Petroleum .

BP became the first company in the oil industry to emphasize the need for health.safety.Browne mentioned about to take preventive measures to face climatic change it means µBeyond Petroleum¶ .

‡ In 2002.changing it from a green shield to the white. ‡ Company re-branded its logo.green and yellow sunburst logo of helicos . BP underwent significant changes to project itself as a µgreen¶ company.

South America and Canada. . Exploration extended from the Middle East. and the British got fuel for their navy. the high demand for oil enabled them to expand greatly. Africa. 1940¶s sales profits rose to record levels. BP participated actively at the Buenos Aires UN framework Convention on climate change(UNFCC) conference and supported the clean development mechanism(CDM) . BP quit the Global Climate Coalition(GCC) which was formed by a group of US-based companies after the report given by IPCC ( Intergovernmental panel on climatic change)  GCC was not in favor of taking any action to reduce the GHG emission.ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES  In 1996. BP was the first company to quit GCC  It also supported Kyoto protocol in order to reduce the GHG emissions  It also gave allowances to the regions which reduce the emmisions  In 1988.

BP joined the US government in supporting the clean energy initiative by producing µGreener Diesel¶  An ultra violet low sulfur diesel that emitted 90% less sulfur dioxide  BP also reduces the sulfur content in oil .company major operations were complying with ISO 14001  BP also a part of a global initiative started in 2000  The main aim was to invest in the research and development of advanced decarburization and geologic storage technology. which would reduce the GHG emission  In 2003.ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES  In 1999.

hydrogen.FORAY INTO RENEWABLE SOURCES  BP make huge investment s in developing renewable sources of energy.relpacing the 95 octane petrol  BP invests $23 million in the wind energy project in the Nerefco oil refinery of Netherlands in 2002 to generate electricity through wind energy .BP became the first company to launch cleaner unleaded petrol with low sulfur content.solar energy and wind energy  Company decided to replace coal and oil with natural gas as a fuel as natural gas emitted lower carbon  In 2000. also called µgreen energy¶  It ventured in to energy sources like natural gas.
